In a strange way this might help him in the long run.
RBs in the NFL get old from wear and tear so quickly. Their first several years they come very cheap and then by the time they have the power to get a bigger contract they don't have many big years left. Bell missing three games when he's not getting paid much anyway may help him later. Unless perhaps these missed games won't count as service and it makes it that much longer until he has in enough service to become a free agent (or threaten to become one lest the Steelers pay him big bucks).
