Wife is thinking Dell Latitude which gives us what we need. Any advice on what type and additions or other similar brand? Need high speed access with plenty of storage, and we're hoping to keep cost under $2,000. Appreciate input...

Apple

With that kind of budget, I too would at least stop by an Apple Store to look at a Mac. It is really a different experience compared to Windows. Lots of good software. May be a good fit depending on your specific requirements.

Buy any Intel 2020 or Pentium for $279.00 brand new. Cost: $279.00
Take the back cover off and put a Samsung 500 GB Solid State hard drive. Cost about $200.00
While you have the back cover off install two DDR 3 12800 16 GB of memory (2 X 8) $200.00
Then take out the 72 MB wireless card and install a 1000 (866) GB card seen here. Cost $25.00
If you go to these pages on my web site you will see why.

I rebrand Intel (only) and sell lots of these.

I don't want any heat so I never buy i3, i5 or i7's...

Solid state hard drives made the processor less important for speed; way less.

Windows 10 Pro Insider preview....unreal, runs rings around any Apple or Mac.

Anyone wanting to debate me on this should be very careful since in the last 9 years Steve
Jobs and Apple switched to all Intel hardware just like Microsoft so those willing to
pay thousands for the same hardware and the name Apple or Mac, well it's only money, go
ahead.

Oh, I forgot, then install a GigaSpeed modem and router. (Remember 866 MB per second is
useless if you have a 100MB modem and router...get it.

^^^This. Computers are so cheap these days, and even the most basic are way more powerful than what you need. The really high end stuff is for serious gamers, and that's about it. Apple - you're just overpaying for a name with less computing power and a second rate operating system that has been made to look pretty.

Exactly, Apple is the big lie that people have swallowed hook, line and sinker; Intel is Intel, no matter what
name is on the PC.

It's like my buddy years ago that sang the praises of a certain Gasoline Brand and I said, what are you talking
about, the same truck goes to all of them in town so you get the same gasoline no matter where you
buy it. He didn't believe me so we followed the truck, ruined his little world.

Get a PC any PC a "Ford is a Ford", nice car :)
I have purchased, and maintained more computers than most people on the planet (my work life). I DO know who makes the best. But, I do not want to appear a "know it all". I recall having one of our work shops make up some DELL posters when a VP from Dell come to visit and talk about sales. The poster's read "Dell it's GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU". He did not think they were all that funny.
To be candid buy what "you" think will work for you. Much has to do what applications you plan on running (if games are you thing, get a PC not a Mac). If reliability and being virtually virus free get a Mac. It just "is what it is" (don't you just hate that expression).
This has nothing to do with "emotion" just my experience.

Thanks NYNY for an informative post. My next laptop is coming from your shop.

Dawgduice, wow what a teaser, come back and inform us who makes the best computer.

Second rate operating system compared to Windows, which isn't an operating system

If you are into artistic endeavors: music, art, photography, educational work then get a MAC. Otherwise get an Intel, my preference is a Dell. Get as much memory that you can afford. Today's Hard drives are plenty big enough for most peoples needs. As for Cloud storage and/or backup, be careful: let the buyer beware.

NYNY,

Do you sell laptops or just repair them? I checked your website but did not see anywhere that you sell.

The high end laptops are also for college students that are in majors like engineering that need at least an i5 processor and a dedicated graphics card.

I have had a MacBook Pro for 6 years and love it to death. No worries about viruses which made the others terrible choices IMHO.
But it depends on what you want to use it for.
If you go Apple you will never regret spending a bit more money. (And I was never an Apple guy. I was afraid to go with Apple, spending more money for something I didn't know about.) If my Macbook Pro broke down today, I would get another one tomorrow.

We have a "winner" :)

I'm an engineer. Its overkill. Big time.

I agree with nyny,I bought an acer laptop a few years ago.It is used to surf the web, email etc and its been great for a cheap brand.Of course I hooked up a keyboard.I cannot stand laptop keyboards.
It came with win seven, three gigs of ram and a two hundred and forty gig hd @ 5400.I installed two four gig sticks of ram and an ssd hd of the same size. This thing is seriously fast now.Boot times are remarkable.By the way I cloned the hd with free software and it could not have been easier to do.

We have a winner, now brupsu, all you have to do to run rings around any Mac is
install a $25.00 GigaSPEED wireless adaptor in it found here: Takes two minutes to
install. Also, don't forget to then install a GigaSpeed modem and router. (Remember 866 MB per second is
useless if you have a 100MB modem and router...get it.
