OT: Mets fans, Rusty Staub passed away last night.

I remember seeing him play when I was a kid and so was he. Bucs and the Colt 45s played a Memorial Day double header. He was stout. Said to see but oddly appropriate that’s it’s Opening Day.

One of my true boyhood heroes. I met him once at his rib place in NYC and I asked him a question about ribs, not baseball, and he took the time to give a very good answer. He will be missed. Le Grande Orange, may you rest in peace.

Yes I do. I was debating which commercial to post. I seem to recall seeing Rhinegold, Schaefer and Piels on WOR-9

In 1970, we took a family vacation to Niagara Falls. We spent about three days there, saw all there was to see and decided to take an extended road trip and visit my relatives in Cranford, NJ. This required a drive on the NY state Thruway totally across New York state and then take 87 south to Jersey. Just before we crossed into Jersey, we passed the Rhinegold brewery. I was not anywhere near legal drinking age, even for those days, but being a Mets fan from PA, it was a bit of a thrill driving past the main brewery of their major sponsor. The reason you don't see a lot of those beers anymore is because in the 70's, August Busch undertook a campaign to get his Budweiser placed as THE beer of every ballpark in the US and the result was a lot of these smaller breweries like Schlitz, Schaffer and Rhinegold were driven out of business. I have never had a "Bud" and this is why one will never touch my lips.

Rusty was the line drive hitter the Mets of the late 1960s needed badly (Donn Clendenon worked out OK) but his presence graced Flushing, Queens in the 70s just the same. I can still name the starting line up for the '69 Mets but wouldn't have a clue who plays for them now :(

I will never forget the 1973 season
and Rusty Staub was a big part of that team. The Mets could have won that World Series if it were not for a costly error. Sometimes I get carried away, RIP Rusty you will forever be a NY Met.

First Indy Car race I went to!

But even more memorable was seeing Linda Vaughan, Miss Hurst Shifter
