Hopefully this stays as its own thread, as I've not seen one before. El Jefe's comment in the Blaze thread about freshmen STILL not being allowed to drive and park on campus got me to thinking about unforgettable moments and people I met on campus when I was there from 1982-85. I got a couple tickets for parking because I drove in from Lock Haven one term. Bastards!

1. 1982 was the last year for terms at PSU, and everything was done by paper back then. You wanted to change classes, you had to stand in lines to make a change. A "wonderful" experience to say the least. 1983 went to the semester system.

2. I took Theater 1 as an elective in 82 or 83 in Schwab Auditorium. I always remember a preacher outside that venue on many days telling us that we would be visited by the King of Kings. Of course, we all thought he was referring to Jesus, but no. He was referring to the Burger King. Always felt bad for him, as did most students. I always wonder what happened to him.

3. I grew up in a strict household. I didn't have my first alcoholic drink until coming to PSU. I started June 1982 in Porter Halls, and on night one I joined a grain alcohol party. What an introduction LOL. There was a female dorm next door and the most stunning model-quality girl would sunbath topless on many days. Mid summer we had a slave auction for something, and she was sold off as a slave. I wish I wasn't so poor in those days.

4. Very fond memories of the "Caboose", the speakeasy in back of the Train Station. I think the place had a 5 watt lightbulb for lighting. Big barrel of popcorn for dinner 3x a week.

5. My Big Brother at Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity was Steve Bosak, the future father of Scott Bosak. A great guy and very good chess player.

6. One of my roommates at TEP fraternity was Dave Paterno, the one who almost died in the trampoline accident years earlier. I once caught Sue Paterno as she was falling backwards on the circular staircase at the fraternity holding an oversized basket of clean laundry. Moms being mom.

We were at PSU at roughly the same time....I graduated in 1986. Good times and memories, even some of the lean times sustaining myself.

I remember well the transition from terms to semesters. They had to realign the class content so in the first semester some of my profs didn't get it quite right and ran out of time to cover the entire syllabus in a few classes.

Freshman year in East Halls and trudging across the "Tundra" (or parking lot 80) in winter. https://www.psu.edu/news/campus-life/story/parking-lot-80 That lot is long gone. Funny how miserable that was at the time, but now evokes fond memories and a badge of honor.

CE/Surveying class on Old Main lawn in Spring.......with all the sun bathers :) Transits have multiple purposes.

All the camaraderie with the other freshman in Pinchot Hall, especially on my floors, including faux Pro wrestling in the study area.

In Thompson Hall (West Halls) getting psyched for the Nebraska game and the guy across the hall using his university bed sheets as a sign banner. Back then, there were only a few nationally televised games each Saturday, so it was a big deal when PSU was on, especially a night game.

Related to that....prior to Beaver Stadium having lights, when the networks, I guess it was ABC, brought in portable lighting for a night game.

Goal posts going down, and being carried thru downtown after a big win (I forget which game that was....Notre Dame or Nebraska?)

Stickies at the Ye Olde Diner. Is that still a thing? Sounds corny now, but the diner was good place back then and was a fun tradition.

Dollar burgers at Hardees on College Ave. I remember leaving LA studio late at night walking to my apartment over towards SC High and stopping by Hardees. It sustained us on a very limited budget.

Cheap movies at the Forum.

And the best of all...and probably the most fortunate, experiencing two national championships in my 4 years at Penn State.

Sorry........I got carried away.......lots of great memories :)

I was so poor because I was putting myself through college, and PSU so computer illiterate back in the day, that I ended up taking 27 credits in fall 1985 to graduate in December of that year. I can't imagine anyone else ever doing that. Otherwise, I would have graduated in 1986 as well.

Going to Ye Olde College Diner at 4-5am for breakfast after pulling an all nighter was a rite of passage.

I remember the goal post nights. My first summer, I worked at the Admissions office, and every day I used to walk past Todd Blackledge as he walked to the broadcasting building. They beat Georgia and Herschel that year.

My biggest regret is missing the 36-6 drubbing of Notre Dame in 1985. I actually had applied to the CIA, and they gave us a 5 hour test that day. Glad I missed the rain, but nothing beats killing Notre Dame.

1972-1976, all four years in Stuart Hall. John Cappelletti winning the Heisman trophy! Typical Paterno move - John played as a linebacker as a underclass man if I remember correctly. Lydel Mitchell and Franco Harris in the backfield his first two years might have been a factor.

Tackle football in the Stuart/Snyder quad when it snowed. Guys & girls streaking in the Towers/Stuart outdoor volleyball court.

Taking 10x13 mailing envelopes, filling them with shaving crème, sliding the open end under a dorm room door. Then gently placing a large textbook on top and then jumping on the book, grabbing the book and hightailing it back to our room. The shaving crème would smack against the metal heating element which was in every room.

Taking metal trash cans half full of water and carefully propping them tilted against a dorm room door. Then going on the other side of the dorm hallway and phoning the room. (The phones were out in the hallway so you’d open the door in to exit and grab the ringing phone.

Lastly, playing way too many late night games of pinochle and eating delivery pizza. My GPA would have been higher but for those darn pinochle marathons!

I started in 1982 as well. I made it to the ND game in 1985, but it wasn’t among my best showings. My girlfriend and I had an oopsie moment that year, and she wanted to keep it a secret. Bottom line: my daughter was born that morning in Hershey, but with my buddy in town for the game we figured he’d know something was up if I skipped town and missed it. Didn’t get down to Hershey until Sunday to see her. Not a lot went quite right for a few years, but everybody’s doing well now, and my daughter will be out here in Chicagoland with my two granddaughters next week.

Ye Old College Diner is not a thing...
you can still buy boxed stickies at the creamery, but you need to reheat them.

I had one final to go and then I was ready to graduate. A friend who was in the same class and I went to a bar across from the Engineering building and we both drank enough beer so that we were pretty buzzed going into the final. It took me a little time to get my bearings, but I aced the final and graduated with a 3.75 GPA with a BSME.
