Apparently he was beaten in a hazing ritual and messed his back up something fierce.

In his autobiography, Joe Namath said he refused to go through with this, and just didn't join the club. Bryant tried to talk him into it, he said, but he wouldn't go along. Interestingly enough, he didn't mention anything about beatings as a reason for not joining. He simply said that he didn't see the point of drinking Tabasco Sauce.
