"meet joe black" is a great film that is often overlooked. just a great movie in so many ways.

Another movie I really like is the 1981 Excalibur movie. Tremendous videography, music and british stage acting. Plus, a timeless story that is educational for the kids.

Six favorites and you can probably get them free on line.

Starting Over- Burt Reynolds and Jill Clayburg rom/com. These two were at their height. Great date movie.

The Wind and the Lion - Sean Connery, Brian Keith, Candice Bergen. History/Comedy/Romance based on real life. A US President and an Arab Sheikh face off over a kidnapped US citizen.. in 1904.

The Man Who Would Be King - Sean Connery and Michael Caine. John Huston directs. These two are great together. Excellent.

39 Steps - 1935 flick and A young Hitchcock directs Robert Donat as the Everyman falsely accused as a murderer. Madeline Carol is the woman, and absolutely beautiful.

Being There- Peter Sellers and Shirley McCain. Chauncey Gardener is one of my top ten all time movie characters.

Caine Mutiny Court Martial- Bogart, Jose Ferrer, Van Johnson, Fred McMurray. The ending takes a twist that is one of the more memorable thanks to a brilliant Jose Ferrer performance.

Running on Empty (1988)- directed by Sidney Lumet, starring River Phoenix, Judd Hirsch, Christine Lahti, & Martha Plimpton.

Phoenix received an Oscar nomination for supporting actor and the screenplay was nominated as well.

One of my all time favorite sleeper films. Hirsch & Lahti play a couple on the run since bombing a napalm lab in the 1970s that was supposed to be empty but ended up paralyzing a janitor. They’ve been moving and creating new identities every time the FBI gets close. Phoenix plays their oldest son, a high schooler with aspirations of going to music school. Given that his school transcripts are buried under numerous fake identities, college is an impossible dream without exposing his real identity and breaking up his family. While the politics of the era are there, they take a back seat to the family dynamic. The parents sacrificed their future in order to keep the family together, but their son’s only chance for a future will split the family apart.

Ebert gave it four stars when it was released:

How do you explain it to your children, when you take the family dog and put it out into the street and say that it will surely find a home - and then you drive out of town, forever? That's what happens in an early scene of "Running on Empty," and the most chilling thing about it is that the children take it fairly well. They've abandoned family dogs before. And they've left town a lot of times.

This week I will watch A Man For All Seasons for, perhaps, the 20th time. It is not "lesser acclaimed" as it won the Academy Award for best picture and best actor (Paul Schofield), but when I mention it to people, few have seen it. It is my favorite movie of all time...a lesson in uncompromising principles.

Uh, not sure you meant to include Eurotrip in there ... Matt Damon is NOT in that movie, and it contains full frontal nudity of chicks and dudes. It's a raunchy sex comedy.

I second Dark City. One of the best Scifi movies I've seen.

Oh yeah, I guess he did make a cameo ... but putting him out there as a listed actor ... like he's a lead ... is misleading. It's still a raunchy teen sex comedy that I wouldn't be including in a family movie night.
