well this isn't wrestling but I just had to say goodbye to my baseball hero growing up as a 10 yr old in 1960 the first time I saw Pete Rose play for the Reds I bacame a Reds and Pete fan for life he played the game the way it meant to be played he had faults as we all do but he played to win every day.I will miss Charlie Hustle!RIP MY MAN

Pete Rose is an interesting character, he is the epitome of how to play the game and the epitome of how not to live your life.
last time I looked gambling was legal does it really matter how or who you bet on and aren't steriod users in the hall?they shouldn't be!I would like to know how many athletes bet on sports?to many to count

Rose was offered a lifeline by commissioner Bart Giamatti, who said at the time: "The burden to show a redirected, reconfigured, rehabilitated life is entirely Pete Rose's." Rose did nothing. You know, if he had apologized right away and shown some remorse, instead of stonewalling for 15 years, it’s possible he might have been reinstated.

Lets not ever go into the fourteen year old girl thing.

Lifelong Phillies fan, after my Grandfather was a fan and would take me to a game from time to time.

So, I'm sitting in the Memphis airport back in about 2004, waiting to fly to Cincinnati. A guy sits down next to me and says, "Do you see who's sitting down there?" I look down the row of seats, and there is Charlie Hustle, himself. I'm not one to bother celebrities, so I said, "That's pretty cool," and kept on doing what I was doing.

We boarded, I sat down in my aisle seat, and the window seat remained open, and Pete hadn't boarded, yet. More people come on, no one sits in the seat, and Pete still isn't there. Finally, the last guy to come on the plane is Pete. He walks down the aisle, gets to our row, and says, "I'm in there."

As he was sitting down, I said, "I just want to let you know I'm a lifelong Phillies fan." He made a comment like, "Is that right?" He sits down, puts on his reading glasses, and opens up his newspaper to, what else, but the box scores, which I thought was pretty funny. After he got the information he needed, he changed over to his regular glasses, put the paper down, and said, "So, why are you a Phillies fan?"

And, that question led to an hour and a half conversation with Pete Freaking Rose, primarily about his days with the Phillies. As we were flying into Cincinnati, we banked over the river, and he pointed out some locations that he remembered from his childhood.

All in all, pretty cool experience. I hope he ends up in the Hall, just so I can tell that story about a Hall of Famer, besides the fact that he belongs.

Did you look out the window and show him the tree you fell out of? Joking!

his life is over, he can go in now. The issue about letting him in early - is simple - make exceptions and you'll have more gambling.. hell of a deterrent...

I'm guessing most Pete's bad habits (off the field) were pretty tame compared to Babe Ruth or many others in that era...

which bad trait, signing for hrs for kids when he was a player or showing everyone in the world how to play the game?he should be in the hall end of story

Considering that baseball has the single largest amount of "unwritten rules" - that Pete broke one that is actually written down in EVERY clubhouse says a lot.

He shouldn't be in the hall. And even after the ban, he had the chance to get back in, and ruined it out of sheer arrogance. F him.

Being a flaming racist.

My former boss Tim (also a PSU alum) is a black man in a mixed-race marriage. Rose hit on Tim's white wife in front of Tim, and said such vile things as "what are you doing with someone like him?"

Rose was a grsat baseball player and an equally great dirtbag.

You should never like 75% of pro athletes then. Hell 75% of D1 football or basketball athletes then.

A “flaming racist?” A very rudimentary google indicates that is not a widely held opinion on Rose’s negative traits, of which there were many that are generally acknowledged.

This is excuse-making.

But you are free to agree with Google instead of my boss' first-hand, in-person account.

It's a variation of the old theme: someone who is nice to me but a jerk to the waiter, is not a nice person.

I gave up athlete worship long ago. And I can separate the man from the jersey -- in both directions.

Many are very good people who do a lot of good, or at least do no harm. And the Bell Curve applies too.

And in fairness, Rose was not nearly as bad a human being as, say, Lenny Dykstra.

I’m not doubting your boss’s personal recounting of his interaction with Rose (if you can’t trust a guy who’s pissed at a guy who hit on his gal for unbiased testimony, who can you trust?), but for an overall evaluation in terms of Rose’s interactions with people of color… yes, I’m going with teammates, players, et al who were there for more than a cocktail party.

(Forgot to mention, I am a PSU alum, as are my three daughters, son, and one son-in-law, since that is apparently important here. :) )

So he's a good person because he only mistreated others when he thought there would be no consequences? Got it.

A single personal source, one person of color tells you he had a problem with Rose, and you believe that substantiates your decree that Pete was a “flaming racist.”

If someone were on here making a determination of a wrestler’s ability based on ONE match they HEARD about, rather than what the wrestler’s history of results showed, you’d be mocking them—quite justifiably.

Re-read that quote and try to convince anyone it wasn't racist.

Tried to find any reference online suggesting Rose was a racist. Couldn’t find anything. The only racial reference was that as a rookie he tended to hang out with black teammates such as Frank Robinson and Vada Pinson and claimed the Reds management complained about him spending time with them. The white veterans were not happy with him taking the second base position from Don Blasingame and, as veterans tended to do at that time with rookies, gave him the cold shoulder.

“Someone like him”

too short
too fat
too skinny
small hands
balding
bad dancer
bad breath
bad dresser
acting dickish

Sure sounds like Rose was a racist…
