OT: Philadelpha and Pittsburgh on "short" list of cities for Amazon's 2nd headquarters

Hopefully Pittsburgh listed its #1 selling point in their Amazon proposal - the availability of major college football and championship collegiate sports of many types. All the Amazon employees will need to do is make a 130 mile scenic drive to the east and they can witness college sports at their best.

You really can't let go of Pitt football, can you? No one cares about it, yet it's virtually all you talk about especially when it comes to discussing non-football related things in Western PA.

I actually post about a lot more than pitt football, but, if you don't like my posts I suggest you put me on the ignore list. Here is direction on how to do that - link. If I am on your ignore list you won't be burdened with seeing my posts.

Amazon has released a "short" list of cities it's considering for its second headquarters.

But the list isn't exactly short. The 20 potential cities include Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Columbus, Ohio, Dallas, Denver, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Miami, Montgomery County in Maryland, Nashville, Newark, New York City, Northern Virginia, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, Toronto and Washington D.C.

Last year, Amazon (AMZN) received bids from 238 cities and regions from across 54 states, provinces, districts and territories across North America. The company said it would make a decision in 2018.

Called HQ2, the new facility will cost at least $5 billion to construct and operate, and will create as many as 50,000 high-paying jobs.

"Getting from 238 to 20 was very tough - all the proposals showed tremendous enthusiasm and creativity," Holly Sullivan of Amazon Public Policy said in a statement. "Through this process we learned about many new communities across North America that we will consider as locations for future infrastructure investment and job creation."

Pittsburgh is emerging as a tech hub. That plus Carnegie Mellon would be the main positives. I think the biggest downside is the airport. Absolutely terrible flight options.

Thanks for the tip--I enjoy the comedy. It helps reinforce my low expectations for humanity.

I know you’re kidding, but the fey, skinny jeans, granny glasses-wearing types I met from Amazon would have no interest in such crass entertainment. Hosting them out in West Texas was pretty humorous.

There really are a lot of diversity of topics on this message board. People talk about the Phillies, smoking meats, car models, Sandusky legal matters, firearm storage, potato chips brands, personal vacation plans, etc. It seems the only peripheral topic that people take shots at are the many posters who enjoy tormenting the cretins on the pitt message board. I'm not the only one who enjoys posting negative pitt messages. I'm puzzled why people accept all the other peripheral topics but express outrage when someone posts a backhanded slap at pitt football. It doesn't make sense to me.

Yes, there are many topics here.

The issue with backhanded slaps at Pitt is that those doing it always bitch that Panther Lair and other Pitt fans talking about Penn State all the time. Same people also frequently talk about Pitt being irrelevant. So, to come here and take backhanded slaps at all things Pitt is hypocritical. If they're so irrelevant, who cares what their fans post on message boards, and who cares what they do on/off the football field?

I never say pitt is irrelevant. I'm old. I go back to the 60s and 70s when the pitt game was the key game of the season. I have a lot of older pitt friends and we constantly engage in heated banter. The pitt game was the most important game on our schedule for me the past 2 years. I suppose you are younger and pitt is not relevant to you. That's OK. pitt banter on this message board is a niche thing, just like Eagles banter or talk about trout fishing. I do think there is room for it.

Raleigh got a bus recently, and three bathrooms for every two people. And public schools in NC are rapidly moving out of the bottom 20 percent nationally. What else do you need?

You know, if you went to Pitt's trophy room and spent 1 minute staring at each of their National Champions trophies, it would take you decades to see them all

It will be Dallas-Fort Worth. No state income tax, big tax incentives, centrally located with one of the biggest airports in the country (DFW). Toyota just opened its HQ here this past year and there have been more corporate HQ relos here in the past 10 years than anywhere else in the US.

Wherever it is, I am sure all of the unemployed robots in that city will be ecstatic.

It wouldn't surprise me. Great climate, affordable housing (at least on the western side), very business friendly, Amazon distribution center already in the Alliance area. The DFW metroplex plays to win.

DFW is the likely pick. The only chance Pittsburgh has is if the Amazon employees start a petition that demands they be close to Penn State sports. It might happen.

Every location is offering major tax incentives. I expect the new location to be on the east coast somewhere.

On the whole, I would choose NoVa. Only problem is the traffic. I just don't know whether traffic is a concern and how many of their personnel can telecommute (if that is even done anymore). Other than that, Philly makes a lot of sense as it is so close to NY, Baltimore, WashDC, Richmond. Pittsburgh is more attractive than people may realize because of CMU, good health care, lots of white collar talent in so many areas and it is the connection between the East and the Midwest. Frankly, I don't think location should be that important or they would have already decided. It just appears they are looking for the best deal and want to fine tune their decision.

. This will only be about money and which city and state is willing to give the best deal.

.....also, which county.

Pittsburgh on the short list has me wondering what the county is willing to give....not just what the city is willing to give. Plus, the surrounding counties......
