OT: PSU fraternity system on the ropes. Down to 36 chapters from 54 not long ago. Houses being suspended and shut down by the University.

All racist organizations, including where applicable fraternities and sororities, and those that defend them. should go away. We don’t need them in a civilized society
I agree.

Which of the following PSU Greek organizations do you consider racist?

Alpha Kappa Alpha
Alpha Phi Alpha
Delta Theta Sigma
Kappa Alpha Psi
Omega Psi Phi
Zeta Phi Beta.

I gave you an opening to not react like an idiot, and you refused to take it. That's on you now. Own it.

Wow. In that same story, Sigma Chi is under double secret probation until 2024. Effectively a death penalty.
Didn't "mask up" properly at a Social?

Maybe someday people will realize that the awful frats are in the right, and The U and the thought police are in the wrong. Maybe. I hope.

I don’t care who they are. My statement still applies. I’m not judging them. If they’re racist they should go, and if not they should stay. You don’t understand that? Why defend those who engage in racist behavior? By the way your tailor called — your hood is ready.

Who decides what's racist? You? You're a special kind of stupid - no offense.

Not really. Due to the frequent imposition of suspensions, most of these fraternities have lost any sense of continuity. They’ll just start the thing up again in 2024.

BTW, the house has been unoccupied all year, so I guess their gathering was some kind of off campus party at someone’s private residence. Oh well, the Asst. Dean of Anti-Fun has to justify her 6 figure salary.

I am not condoning or criticizing their behavior. It was stupid of them to post photos of their party dressed as Mexicans talking about their lawn maintenance people. These types of things have consequences and Chi O apparently didn’t anticipate that the reaction would not be in their self interest as some people would view it as racist. Whatever jokes I’ve told in my lifetime is not relevant to this conversation.
I know it’s wrong of me but I’m hearing of this for the first time and picturing those boys running around with giant hats drinking cerveza making schedules for tomorrow s lawn work made me lol

This can’t be good for THON with all the money Greek organizations raise.
I agree. THON used to be mostly a Greek event. A Fraternity brother of mine was the overall chairman when the decision was made to change the name to THON.

In addition to THON, most Greek organizations also fielded their own philanthropies which raised thousands of dollars for their respective charities.

My fraternity was put on suspension for a year due to a non-member kid being found drunk in town. He claimed he got drunk at our fraternity house. It is very difficult to maintain a fraternity if you lose an entire year of recruiting, much like if the NCAA didn't let a team bring in a recruiting class for an entire year. You can still sustain the fraternity chapter, but it is very difficult.

We alums got together and decided that given that the university doesn't really want our chapter there anyway, it wasn't worth trying to pump money into keeping the house going for a year and trying to rebuild the chapter once the suspension ended. Even if we did keep it going, the university would find something else to sanction, and any momentum we could generate would likely be for naught. So, we sold the house and are keeping the money in escrow for the time being.

I agree with the OP. The Greek system is on the ropes.

My old chapter house is in a prime location. The fraternity next door is on probation and they leased their beautiful house to a sorority. Our chapter membership is way down, and there are even fewer living in the house, with Covid an issue as well since the virtual part of 2020 saw members move back home making it harder yet to pay the normal bills.

I attended a conference call with a number of brothers from my generation, before Covid, including a good number that I am still close friends with. The topic was options to save the chapter, including refinancing, contributions for either house improvements or against the current mortgage that was taken on for previous capital improvement,....

My comment to the group was that if you can't survive with a sorority living next door, you may as well shut the doors..........

My old house comes w/ a double lot. Imagine how many condos they could build here!

My grandfather was the president of Chi Phi back in the late thirties.

Buddy of mine was in one of the smaller frats which had been hurting for brothers. One year the pledges consisted of a small group of friends and when things went bad between one of the brothers and a pledge the entire group of friends bailed. Within a year the house was sold and the chapter disbanded.

Ya’ll can blame cancel culture or the youth of today but it seems the greek culture has been naturally decaying for awhile now with recent events and crackdowns only serving to speed up the process.

University spies all over downtown looking for girls - GIRLS! - entering fraternity houses, then they call the cops alleging the frat is violating the Borough's COVID ordinance. Meanwhile, non-Greek apartment and house parties abound in State College. Fraternities can't get guys to live in their houses because in apartments they can have fun and party with little supervision. In the fraternity house, it needs to now be like a monastery. After over a hundred years, severe risk that there will be no fraternities at Penn State within a couple years. Sad.
I did not know that we had lost so many. I know the university long had their eyes on Phi Gam and Sigma Nu, because they wanted the on-campus property. The same goes for Beta. I was in ATO and I think we are still OK. That may be because we have won the Greek portion of Thon every year for the past 15 or so years bringing in millions. I would not doubt that the off-campus will also get harassed until they call it quits. My daughter went to UP campus and I know that there was/is an equal amount of crap going on in the apartments - maybe worse, I think it is all about $$$$$$$. I think it is also fear of being sued for students being hurt at parties or because of pledging nonsense. Sadly, fraternities have become less than glorious rooming houses.

MAN am I glad I'm not a kid in today's screwed up world!!!!! How in the heck do guys meet a girl in real life anymore????

Being in a Fraternity was one of the drop dead BEST experiences in my life!!!

I spoke with a member of the Sigma Chi house corporation the other day. He indicated that they are renovating the house with the intention of reestablishing the chapter in 2014. The interesting thing he mentioned was the possibility of trying to NOT be affiliated with the school. In the interim, other ideas have been floated, such as making the house available to alumni for various functions; football games, Arts Fest, golf reunions etc.

That was our fraternity’s thought as well. The only way we would move forward is if the fraternity could get out from under university governance. Our legal team found that approach was unworkable, although I don’t know the details as to why.

And eating a poop as a bro requirement has somehow lost its appeal.
it takes a modicum of toughness to eat a poop
