Aside from the sociological aspect, fascinating, this is an extremely well put together film, little bits and pieces amount to much more than the sum of their parts. Great acting all around; I'm convinced that Jennifer Lawrence's Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook was a make-up for not getting one for this, playing one of the great characters of American film. Bleak but honest and totally compelling from start to finish.

is it on Netflix?? Where did you see it?? TIA

It is most likely the best and only truly honest film based on crime from methamphetamine to ever come out. That includes "Spun", which is great, but is a comedy/farce, and "Requiem for a Dream", which is well acted, but dishonest.

I am not a movie guy, but I can tell you that the novel "Winter's Bone" by Daniel Woodrell is very very solid. He is an excellent writer in a genre which has become sort of jokingly known as "hillbilly noir." I have read a great deal of his stuff and it is all excellent.

Yeah, I was doing some surfing and apparently in the book the characters are much more fleshed out, their relationships much more explicit.
