OT: RIP Lt Gen Hal Moore

Couple days ago, a cable channel was showing Vietnam in HD. The first episode focused on the battle depicted in the Mel Gibson movie (old guy forgets the name).

They mentioned Hal Moore in the program and a lot of the discussion was with the actual correspondent Joe Galloway who I think was played by Sean Penn.

This battle was one of the first major encounters between US and NVA. The movie is uncomfortable to watch and the show that I watched on TV even more so.

Both the book and the movie made me angry. It just didn't work, no matter how its sold and there are 50, 000+ names on a wall to prove it.

I cannot deny his courage and effort and may he rest in peace

What made you angry? Is it that there are 50K+ names on a wall and everyone perceives the Vietnam War as a loss ? I was there during Tet. I, and every soldier/Marine who fought knew we won. General Giap, in his memoirs, acknowledged that we had won and North Vietnam was ready to call it quits, but public and political confidence, and support, waned . We stopped bombing Hanoi/Haiphong, big mistake according to Giap, we reduced field operations, also cited by Giap. Protests at home to end the war, not unnoticed by North Vietnam. Just my version of military history. FWIW.

I wasn't there and I can't fully tell you how much respect I have for you and the others that served. Friends of mine died there. I just felt we should not have been involved in a war of nationalism. I agree with you that Tet was a disaster for the NVA. The way many guys were treated at home upon their return was despicable.

Thanks. I am just glad the nation is behind our Iraq, Afghanistan, and other places veterans. I've never been more proud of our military. A more belligerent Russia and China, continued conflict in Iraq, Afghanistan and other places and our armed forces are serving with pride and honor.

Watching the movie was incredible. Even more incredible to me was each time when they came back from commercial break they interviewed actual men who served under him. The respect these great men had for this commander you could see it and hear it. They had so much trust in him and would do anything for him.

He led from the front, that's something that can't be faked.

Hal was the uncle of a friend of mine, and he was actually named for him. I didn't know this (he never mentioned it even though we both were in a small, tight faith group) til the local paper did an article about him when the movie came out. I understand he 'retired' to managing several companies away from the military/defense areas and did some leadership consulting.

------

The military won that war but the public, aided by the media and the government, lost it. My brother served there and made a recent trip there that was very therapeutic. If you have desire to go back, by all means do so.

Thank you for your service and welcome home!
