OT: What is the best Beatles Album? Sgt. Peppers? Don't know....thoughts please.

Revolver or Rubber Soul. I'm Torn

Rubber Soul for me.

I like the double White for some entertaining lyrics as well. But RS is the one I think displays their talent. For me, St. Peppers is just a gimmicky, put out to make $, album.

JMO but as a huge Beatles fan if the White Album would have been a single instead of double it would have been their greatest.

I'm not sure how anyone can call an album that contains A Day in the Life a gimmicky album, or one put out just to make dollars. A number of critics consider it the best song the Beatles ever made. Many musicians of that era talked about how revolutionary that song was, and how it made them change what they were doing.

Sgt. Pepper was a concept album. In that regard, it was different than any other Beatles album.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds -- what's gimmicky about that?
Lovely Rita -- what's gimmicky about that?
She's Leaving Home -- what's gimmicky about that?
Getting Better - what's gimmicky about that?
When I'm Sixty-Four -- what's gimmicky about that?

With A Little Help From My Friends was entertaining.

Within You Without You was different, a George creation with a heavy dose of sitar.

I was indifferent about Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite. It was fun to listen to, but seemed like more of a song to fit into the concept of the album than a standalone song.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is somewhat entertaining, while also being part of the concept of the album.

I'm not a big fan of Fixing A Hole.

Sgt. Pepper isn't my favorite album, but I'd hardly call it gimmicky or produced just to make money.

Personal favorite is Abbey Road, but I think the most pivotal album was Beatles 65, side 2 especially...

A Hard Day's Night, the album plus the movie really started it all in America. Every album starting with this one is amazing. I'll say, A Hard Days Night representing the early years and The White Album for the later years.

Hey, at least this thread has me "dusting off" my Beatles collection. It's a great slow-season discussion!

Interesting that you chose Beatles 65 as their most pivotal. I would have picked Revolver but I can see your side as well.

What isn't gimmicky about "When I'm 64"?

At any rate, Rubber Soul for me.

Rubber Soul is where things really started to turn a bit dark for the bugs. That's always been my favorite album by them. 'Run for Your Life' is one of the creepiest songs John ever wrote (he even said he regretted writing it, post Beatles), and it was a shocker back then.

It is so hard to say....I really can't single out one.

But I will say that I've seen the Cirque du soleil "Love" exhibit twice and that it blew my mind. It really follows their music in line with a) their life and b) the times. However, listening to their voice and harmonies over a world class sound system was fantastic.

If you are ever in Vegas and Love the Beatles, I can't give it a high enough recommendation.

I bet it would awesome hearing and seeing it with the performances.
As a standalone CD I HATED the Love Album.

Yep...almost bought the CD but opted out at the last second. Its a medley, right? If so, really has to be done with the visuals to reflect the mood and message of the song. The images and audience participation, as will all CDS productions, is amazing.

All You Need is Love, at the end, is amazing (and its such a simple song, yet the arrangement and instramentalization is complex).

The Beatles were so big back then I don't think they were doing anything just to make money because after all, anything they did made big money. They even broke up when they were still hugely popular.

That said, I do think Sgt Peppers is over-hyped and when you actually listen to it it's good but not close to great.

I'll go with Abbey Road as my favorite and Rubber Soul as #2. As someone said, if the White Album was s single album it would have been great and I read once that George Martin wanted it to be a single album but got overruled. Take your favorite half of the White Album and imagine it as one album. That would be one great album. For starters we could get rid of seven minutes of "number nine, number nine." The Yoko-inspried avant garde stuff hasn't aged well.

Abbey Road over Revolver by a nose. Rubber Soul was a turning point, however, IMHO. Correct me if I have the order wrong but Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Sgt. Pepper back-to-back-to-back was about as good as it gets.

Still play them every night for at least a little while on my iTunes.

I may have to re-consider my vote. Check out the Magical Mystery Tour song list. If you take away Flying and Blue Jay Way I'd say every one left is at least quite good and if you take away Your Mother Should Know too I'd say everyone one left is great. ETA: Maybe I'm over-rating Your Mother Should Know. It's shorty and catchy but there's not much more to it than that. But the other 8...wow.

Magical Mystery Tour
Fool On The Hill
Flying
Blue Jay Way
Your Mother Should Know
I Am The Walrus
Hello, Goodbye
Strawberry Fields Forever
Penny Lane
Baby, You're A Rich Man
All You Need Is Love

Yea that is pretty freakin good. But I'm leaving Blue Jay Way, I really like that song.

Funny, Obli...I saw Love back in January and came away a bit unimpressed. Everyone I was with loved it, though, so perhaps I'm just a bit aloof when it comes to this stuff.

My personal favorite is Sgt Pepper. It's the album that got me into the Beatles. With the Beatles though, I wouldn't argue with anyone who thinks another one of their albums is their best. It's kinda just a matter of which "era" of the Beatles you like the most. Never has the world seen a band crank out so many songs that sound so different and are 100% "good" songs. These guys just oozed so much musical talent.

Too each his own. I was telling that to my little girl the other day. She was taking part in a talent competition and I told her that it is YOUR talent. YOU are performing for yourself. You can only hope that people will enjoy your art.

I think there's a lot of wisdom there. I believe the best artists try to please themselves, not others. If they are good, then others will be pleased, too.
