gotta say the Mexico/Panama game was perhaps the WORST fixed sporting event I have seen in a long time. Couldn't believe how blatantly the refs handed that game to Mexico. My brother and I were watching the game at a bar, and we were trying to think of other sporting events that were "fixed" that poorly.

I think the best example we could think of was the 1972 Olympic Basketball game between the USA and Russia . . . but of course, we only watched replays, did not see it live.

of course OSU/PSU came up . . . LOL

If you call Jai-Alai a sport, than that is the most fixed!

Any PSU vs. Mich./OSU game since we joined this joke of a conference.

Once won the trifecta at the last match of the night and was able to fly home instead of driving back. The fix might have been in, but my numbers were random.

Not a big fan of Boxing or International Soccer......so I can't make an educated comment on those two notoriously corrupt sports......but:

Of the sports I follow relatively closely:

USA/USSR Olympic hoops 1972 (which you mentioned).

PSU/UM football 2002.

And, in a close call, I gotta' go with PSU/UM 2002.

The 1999 NBA Eastern Conference playoffs.

The way the Knicks were helped into the finals turned me off to basketball forever.
They were my team, but it was so blatant. Especially against the Pacers.

LdN

Some good ones already listed....IU/PSU hoops (was at that game)...UM/PSU - 2 seconds magically put back on the clock...last year's PSU/OSU football - upon further review, the Nits were screwed...pretty much any game the patriots**** have played in since 2001.

my brother was at the 2005 game with the phantom 2 seconds and 2 gimme plays down the stretch. he said even his Michigan buddies felt PSU got screwed.

For what is supposed to be a premier conference, the BigTen has some of the most incompetent (some would say corrupt) basketball and football officials in the country. There are so many examples, and they don't all just involve Penn State, that it is difficult to say which one is the worst so I will not. I will say this. F the BigTen, its leadership, its officials, its member schools and all their coaches and fans, except, of course, Penn State, although sometimes, even us (Joyner, Peetz, Surma, Masser, Erickson, Suhey, Riley, et al.).

I had that experience...Penn State at Michigan 2002.

Funny thing is that was the American official and the only one that was a head official in the WC from the US. He does a ton of big games, but last night certainly wasn't his shining performance.

  1. 2006 Pitt vs. #2 West Virginia. Pitt won, but you could tell the refs were told to favor West Virginia, try to get them into the title game. As blatant as anything I've ever seen.
  2. 1977 Fiesta Bowl, PSU-Arizona State. PSU won 42-30 but had 12 penalties for 126 yards as opposed to 5-33 for ASU. Also pretty blatant, the refs kept the Sun Devils in the game.

I like 2. You are really showing off your PSU football IQ on that one. Bravo!

Any PSU football game against Michigan or Ohio State.

Don't laugh...I am dead fricken serious. I have attended hundreds and hundreds of college football games in my lifetime. Without question, the most bizarre things happen in games against Michigan and Ohio State.

A quick story, I brought a close friend to the PSU vs OSU back in 2003. I had been telling him about the bizarre officiating that seems to happen during these games. He just humored me...yeah, yeah, yeah,

After the Hartsock dribble catch and game winning field goal, he turned to me and said, "you know, I thought your were full of it when you were talking about the bad officiating....I just witnessed it myself. Penn State just got screwed. What a travesty" And this is from a guy who's grandparents are OSU grads.
I lived in Lincoln, NE for a few years, and those who remember the 80's will tell you that the Nebraska vs. PSU games were fixed based on 2 really questionable calls :)

That's what I meant by "blatant." It's one thing for the refs to suck, and totally another to say that there was a blatant agreement before the game to keep a particular team in it. I'm assuming you saw the game if so, then your reaction was exactly the same as mine, I guarantee you They fooled nobody.

I was young enough that I was literally yelling at the TV set. I'm older, wiser and "somewhat" less emotionally involved these days. It was a clear case of bias and de facto home cooking.

A tie.

1) 1988 Olympic Boxing in Seoul where Roy Jones Jr pummeled So Korean Park Si-Hun for 3 rounds, landing 86 punches to Park's 32, yet lost a 3-2 decision.

2) 1972 US Mens hoops against the Russians.

Travesties both. Must be where Sepp Blatter learned his craft.

No question the roy jones jr. gold medal boxing match.in the 1988 Olympics. I remember him absolutely destroying the guy and then losing the decision. That was the most blatant fixed event I've ever seen. That wasn't even close.

The olympics needs its own category for fraud. Anything that is "judged," boxing, gymnastics, skating...total fraud. The basketball in 72 should be in its own category. The question should be "Excluding Olympics, what is the worst fix, etc...."

Yeah. In this case, they're the pros and everyone else is a real amateur.

+100000000000000...

I was genuinely sad for RJJ - he was heartbroken after the fight having to deal with that travesty. I'll never forget the look on his face. That kid grew up dirt poor and abused and then had that crap thrown in his face. I'm glad he rose above it and became one of the greatest of all time.

Paul Williams/Erislandy Lara - savage beating that had everyone watching asking "Why don't they stop it?"

When they went to the scorecards that question was answered.

Here's the fight for anyone who wants to watch it.
