OT: What's your favorite current Cable TV shows?

Anything I watch on cable is either history or is reality based. The one show I watch religiously, including reruns, is American Pickers.

LOVE Pickers. Mountain Men is interesting. Also like home improvement shows (Fixer Upper is a current fav). I'm warming up to the first few episodes of The Brink (HBO) with Jack Black and Tim Robbins. Just got Netflix back after a year off so I'm catching up on season 2 of House of Cards. Also getting into Bloodline on Netflix.

Except for sports, I kinda hate TV. There is exactly zero on network TV that I have any interest in watching.

On cable I really enjoy true crime/detective shows. Big fan of Moonshiners and Deadliest Catch. Favorite of all is Intervention - new season about to start.

Ray Donovan, True Detective, and Street Outlaws - current. Fast 'n loud, Fat n' Furious and some other car based shows when the series is currently running. Tried watching Justified, but ended forgetting to record some of the series, so I will probably have to find the old shows on DVD, Netflix or whatever else the series may be on.

I'm a huge Ray Donovan fan as well. If you don't watch Banshee on Cinemax (probably because a lot of ppl don't get Cinemax) start immediately. It's the most badass show on TV (if you like tons of violence and smokin hot women). I just started watching Sons of Anarchy on Netflix. Crushed 2 seasons in a week. Can't believe I never watched it, but it's also fantastic being able to serial watch it now and not have to wait week to week.

But yeah Banshee is awesome. I'll even come home early on Friday nights to watch it live.

I've been enjoying Halt and Catch Fire on AMC. Fictional computer manufacturer competing with IBM based in the mid 80s.

Also on AMC, Making of the Mob is really cool. Acted out documentary on Lucky Luciano.

Looking forward to starting up Hell on Wheels again.

Yes agreed...Banshee is a good watch. A decent story line with great lead actors.

Mine are Ray Donovan, House of Cards and Suits!

I think The Strain is very good, If they would just cut out 1/2 the commercials it would be excellent.
I thought the Daredevil series on Netflix was awesome.
I'm waiting for Longmire (probably my favorite for the last 3 years) and Luke Cage.

OK...I have the shows I can watch while my 11 year old daughter is still up and the shows I watch on my iPad in bed before going to sleep. On TV, I watch Naked and Afraid and any of the house flip shows (some Disney TV and Full House if I lose control).

I just got Amazon Prime so all of the old HBO series are on there...well, not all. I just finished up John Adams (which was fantastic, especially with headphones as the period recreation, including sounds, were great). I watched The Pacific which was great.

I also watched their new six part series "Catastrophe" which was really, really funny. It is only 3 hours total. Its about a guy and gal, in their early 40's, meet at a bar and she gets pregnant. At this age, they decide to make a go of if. She lives in London, he in Boston. I've followed the guy on Twitter for years and he's a hoot. Great adult comedy.

If you haven't watched "Suits", that's very good. The lead guy is perfect for the role and its an interesting set up.

I completely understand that lawyering shows aren't going to accurately reflect the profession, because that would be insanely boring TV. But I do expect that they at least make sure major plot lines don't run contrary to law.

So when they show continued to focus on the "non-compete agreement," I quit watching. Any attorney on earth can tell you that lawyers cannot be subject to non-compete agreements (because to do so would only hurt clients, going against what the profession is supposed to be about). So that entire major driver of the plot was based on utter nonsense.

Shows I watch, down a lot from the past:

Walking Dead, Better Call Saul, Veep, Silicon Valley, Game of Thrones, and The Knick.

I kind of quit on House of Cards after I felt it jumped the shark in season 2, and only made it 3 episodes into True Detective this season before I decided it wasn't worth the time this go-round. I also tired of Orange is the New Black a couple episodes into season 2 despite really enjoying the first, not sure why, just think it was a novelty and it wore off for me.

Top "haven't watch yet but want to": The Americans, Peaky Blinders, Banshee.

I'm behind but love Halt and Catch Fire. I'd like to see more 80s-ness, but it's still great and pretty nostalgic. I also like Joe a lot more this season (and Cameron less; thank God for Donna!) which is good since he's so pivotal. Also still like the tone and performances (mostly) of True Detective. Will chalk this season up to a sophomore slump and hope it can rebound.

McAdams and Ferrell, completely agree. Vaughn...ugh.

Yeah I've been very disappointed with this season of True Detective. Also forgot to add Peaky Blinders as well. One of the best shows I've watched in the last 2 years.

I enjoy Mountain Men, but boy is Eustace just the biggest phony on the planet. There's a book about him and how he operates, the reviews are telling: "The Last American Man"

You sold me on Banshee. I will check it out On Demand!

True Detectives is decent but Vince Vaughn as a gangster is a complete miscast.
Season Two pales in comparison to Season Qone which was off the charts great .

I tried watching suits but the premise (high powered lawyers let guy who doesn't have a law license practice law thereby endangering their own licenses) was so stupid I couldn't get past it. If the guy's so brilliant, call him a legal assistant and he would get to do all the same stuff except take depositions and argue in court.

And I can't stand suits with peaked lapels.

I've often wondered, there's no doubt he can pass the bar, my question is, do you have to graduate from law school to practice law? I know you have to pass the BAR exam, but if you can pass the exam, without school, can you practice law? (serious question btw)

Shows not mentioned I like. Fat Guys in the Woods on Weather Channel and Humans on AMC.

Louie
Rick and Morty
Better Call Saul
Naked and Afraid
American Ninja Warrior

wbcincy, I think we have similar tastes in shows. I like many of the shows you mentioned above, and I also quit on House of Cards and OITNB. There is just too much good TV on to waste on iffy shows. I haven't seen The Knick or Banshee, so maybe I will give that one a try. I think you will like The Americans and Peaky Blinders--both are very well-done, with The Americans being the most underrated show on TV. You may also want to check out Black Mirror, particularly if you were ever in to the Twilight Zone.

A couple of other shows that haven't been mentioned much are Fargo, Togetherness (HBO), Key and Peele, and Inside Amy Schumer. But like I said, there is a lot of good TV being made right now.

Never knew that about Eustace....he's the least interesting one on the show anyways (esp now that the guy from Maine isn't on anymore). Not surprising that the network sets the "reality" to tell their own story. I'll keep watching...fascinating how some people live so large with so little of what modern America tells us is important.

Great call on Black Mirror, I've really enjoyed that. I've only watched some of Key and Peele's sketches online, but really enjoy Inside Amy Schumer. I'd add South Park to my list as well. Even though the show has been on forever and has limited episodes now, it's satirical take on current issues remains unparalleled.

Glad you mentioned Fargo, I've been meaning to watch it as well.

Funny you mention legal inaccuracies in a show. I don't know if you made it far enough, but in True Detective season 2, one of the major plot points for Colin Ferrell's character Ray Velcoro is the custody, and legitimacy, of his son Chad. His wife essentially threatens his visitation rights (wants them to be supervised) and if he objects or fights or has any other fits, she'll conduct a paternity test to determine his biological father (pretty sure it's her rapist) Farrell knows this is a strong possibility but would rather not have it proven. In an arbitration meeting, this is all put on the table. In actuality, the law in California says there is a conclusive parentage presumption to a father when his wife conceives while they are married and cohabitating (barring evidence of sterility) under Family Code sec. 7540. That presumption is rebuttable with a blood test, but only if the mother or presumed father files a special motion with the court for a blood test within 2 years of the child's birth (Family Code sec. 7541). In other words, just as we, the audience, might find this situation where Ray raised the kid and can have his parentage unilaterally challenged a decade later, California law finds this unfair too.

Pretty big deal, right?

Anyway, watch Peaky Blinders - it's fookin' awesome.

There are a lot of niche shows I'd love to get to at some point - Orphan Black is good (what I've seen of it), and I want to watch Black Mirror, Mr. Robot, finish Bloodlines, and eventually get to The Wire.

Also, if you haven't watched the BBC Sherlock Holmes series with Benedict Cumberbatch, it's absolutely amazing.
