OT: who would you choose if you were going select people for taking to an isolated/safe location to wait out a huge crisis?

A good barista.

When you're Queen of the World, 2 + 2 can equal whatever the F you want it to. ;)

As you know, F is 16 in the base 16 numbering system. With rare exceptions like clocks and light switches, my daughter is a strict base 10 aficionado, and even stricter when it comes to math accuracy. I'm afraid that if I tried to pass off 2+2=16 that I'd make the wrong list.

A Great book that I read in junior high school and recently reread is Alas Babylon. Published in 1959 by Pat Frank it tells a tale of the aftermath of survival after full blown nuclear war between the USSR and the United States. There is also an article online that details the life lived by Pat Frank. Hugh Hefner had nothing on him.

I've always admired my eighth grade teacher's insight for having young people read such a book.
9th grade english class required reading for me in our district.

Never read the book, but in the early 60s it was made into a television special. I remember few specific details beyond the opening scenes which panned the the remains destroyed house focusing in on every day items such as a stopped alarm clock and toys. It was very disturbing.

Wouldn't 10 be 16 in base 16?

Doh, I forgot to start counting at 0. Decimal 10 = Hexadecimal A and vice versa.
Hexadecimal 10 = Decimal 16 and vice versa.
Hexadecimal F = Decimal 15 and vice versa.

I have now been condemned to The Hell of the Upside Down Sinners in the coming apocalypse.

All of the Expendables. They could build an ark in a snowstorm in 25 minutes so I'm covered. And there better be alcohol. Lots of it. And I suppose the Swedish Cheerleading squad would work just fine. I could fine tune that one...

And I need a DVR that has re-runs of every PSU WIN since 1966. And all the Spenser For Hire episodes.

That is all.

Lawyer(s) would be useful for going outside the bomb shelter to test radiation levels.

If they don’t return, you know it’s not yet safe. If they do return, you don’t let them back in.
You can use the lawyers to chum the waters when fishing is back in season.

I’m watching the movie Greenland now and thought the premise of selecting people for moving to safety was interesting. The idea is that your group may be all that is left, and you rebuild civilization and repopulate the earth. You could say your family, the Dallas cowboy cheerleading squad, your favorite posters from this board, or identify the type of people or specific persons who you would pick.

The ASU cheerleading squad and Cael Sanderson. That should be a good genetic start. I figure if I get the ugly cheerleader out of that squad and Cael gets the rest Im still doing well.

Ok, my list of job descriptions:

Mechanical Engineer
Electrical Engineer
Chemist
Botanist
Veterinarian
Project Manager
Heavy Equipment Operator
Welder
Mechanic
Plumber
Master Carpenter
Weaver
Potter
Crop Farmer
Chicken Farmer

Dan...not many seem to be interested in serious replies to what could be an interesting conversation. I like your list, and while I have questions about one or two, it seems pretty good. I would suggest that a blacksmith would be a critical skill to any group hoping to regenerate society.

I was hoping for both fun and insightful replies…

You’d want someone who knows about planting.

Was that the one where the diabetics died first since at that time insulin needed to be refrigerated and there was no electricity?

An experienced party maven should be on that list to keep the group entertained and in good spirits. Hunter Biden comes to mind.

As a spin off to Ranger Dan’s OP- I was watching War of the Worlds the other day and it got me thinking as they were fleeing NYC. What would you do? Forget who would win in a battle with aliens ;)- just suddenly you have to round up your family and flee. What essentials do you take and where would you go?

That depends on whether the aliens could breath oxygen or were waterborne. Could they walk well on uneven ground…

you will also need a bunch of common laborers to do the jobs the skilled workers won’t do

Let’s say all unknown. Like the War of the Worlds or Independence Day movies- ships appear and start attacking or positioning over major population centers. Where do you go? What do you take with you?

I go to somewhere with the least people, most available natural resources (food and water). Basically, one of our large National Parks.

eric barren and Sandy. If I’m ever hiding out in the midst of a major crisis, I’m going to need first-rate leadering to get through it.
