i don't know of any other sport where the coaches do this. In fact it would look pretty silly in most cases.

I believe it is a throw back to a time when it was common for the manager to also be an on the field player. I’m sure that there are baseball enthusiasts around here that can answer the question more definitively.

If they did not wear a uniform I think it would be quite silly for them to stand there in nothing but a loin cloth. Works well though for hot nights in the summer. ;-)

Why do basketball coaches wear $3,000 suits?

Do you really need an expensive suit to coach basketball?
Yes, otherwise you have to see this...and I bet ole Sean's sweating up a storm right about now.

Start looking on Craigslist (Louisville,KY) for a good deal on some slightly used $3,000 Italian suits - probably for a significant discount.

Combination of that and the fact that old timey dugouts use to be dirty and muddy so managers started wearing uniforms to save their street clothes.

They wear them because they can afford it. And of course they don't need an expensive suit to coach basketball. What does anyone need a $3000 suit for except to try to impress people with their wealth?

Found this ....

What sports fan can ever forget it?
The stirring sight, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, of the Packers charging out of the tunnel at Lambeau Field alongside their legendary leader, Vince Lombardi, who is wearing a football jersey, shoulder pads and a helmet as he prepares to coach his squad to another victory.

Wearing a suit, Philadelphia Athletics manager Connie Mack greets Walter Johnson, pitcher for the Washington Senators, in 1910.

I doubt anyone has to hold a fundraiser for Pitino. His net worth is in the $40 M range.

Of course I remember when as students in the 60s, we wore suits and ties to the games. Then later we'd change into jeans by Saturday night or whatever attire was appropriate for body surfing in beer.

They look ridiculous. Old, fat men wearing vertical stripes. Good look, morons.

Standing next to Chris Christie and Charlie Weis makes one look slimmer.

I literally laughed out loud just now thinking of Saban coaching on the sideline wearing a full Alabama football uniform...it would look like PeeWee football!
