i don't know of any other sport where the coaches do this. In fact it would look pretty silly in most cases.

I believe it is a throw back to a time when it was common for the manager to also be an on the field player. I’m sure that there are baseball enthusiasts around here that can answer the question more definitively.
Baseball Managers actually take up position on the field (1st & 3rd base coaches). That would be my guess

Combination of that and the fact that old timey dugouts use to be dirty and muddy so managers started wearing uniforms to save their street clothes.

They wear them because they can afford it. And of course they don't need an expensive suit to coach basketball. What does anyone need a $3000 suit for except to try to impress people with their wealth?
It would be pretty amusing to see nba coaches in basketball uniforms. Think Frank Layden.

Of course I remember when as students in the 60s, we wore suits and ties to the games. Then later we'd change into jeans by Saturday night or whatever attire was appropriate for body surfing in beer.Found this ....
