I believe that a mutual good nights sleep is one of the must haves for marital bliss, and the situation is not so great these days.

My wife was complaining about not sleeping well... she typically doesn't sleep all that well, but this was worse or a "special cause" (to use quality control vernacular) that she attributed it to the mattress. When we bought our mattress 5 years ago we went with one that was somehow asymmetrical relative to the top and bottom. I forget why it is this way, but this means that we can rotate the mattress, but not flip it. I rotated the mattress and that didn't resolve it. My wife wanted to get a mattress topper, but I do not like super soft mattresses. She got one to try and last night I had the worst night sleep in a while. The mattress was hot and I woke up with a sore back and hip.

I'm looking for advice on how to handle. I think there are foam mattress pads that only cover half a bed, this is least expensive option, I guess. A new mattress might also be a solution, but it seems early (only 5 years). If going for a new mattress, do they make traditional mattresses with one side softer than the other? I thought about the sleep number beds, but I think they are expensive. Are they worth it?

Sleep number, with two separate air bladders. She can adjust her own and you can adjust yours. Yes, they are worth it. I've had mine going on 20 years now and it's just like new. You spend 1/3rd of your life there, make it good,

Maybe she'd sleep better if you got an odor eating and soundproof mattress on your side :)

Some store display model have one side firm and the other plush. Recently saw these mattresses in Macy's and they were selling the floor models.

Other option is the air mattress aka sleep number.

good mattresses seem expensive- until you do the math

We did buy a high end mattress 5 years ago. Maybe we could buy another high end mattress, but without the ability to provide a firmer side and a less firmer side, I don't see how this will resolve our issue. Do you have a specific "high end" mattress that allows separate firmness for each side?

Just purchased 2 "long twin" motion beds. Buy separate "long twin" mattresses. They stay together and look like one king bed when made and you both get to pick the mattress you like.

Do you want to send the Mrs. over to my house to try out my mattress? Just being neighborly.

You're essentially just describing a Sleep Number bed. Go get one.

Too good an opportunity to pass up and as some have lightly touched upon the subject:

From Red Skelton:

1. Two times a week we go to a nice restaurant, have a little beverage, good food and companionship. She goes on Tuesdays, I go on Fridays.

2. We also sleep in separate beds. Hers is in California , and mine is in Texas..

3. I take my wife everywhere....but she keeps finding her way back.

4. I asked my wife where she wanted to go for our anniversary. 'Somewhere I haven't been in a long time!' she said. So I suggested the kitchen.

5. We always hold hands. If I let go, she shops.

6. She has an electric blender, electric toaster and electric bread maker. She said 'There are too many gadgets, and no place to sit down!' So I bought her an electric chair.

7. My wife told me the car wasn't running well because there was water in the carburetor. I asked where the car was. She told me, 'In the lake.'

8. She got a mud pack, and looked great for two days. Then the mud fell off.

9. She ran after the garbage truck, yelling, 'Am I too late for the garbage?' The driver said, 'No, jump in!'

10. Remember: Marriage is the number one cause of divorce.

11. I married Miss Right. I just didn't know her first name was Always.

12. I haven't spoken to my wife in 18 months I don't like to interrupt her.

13. The last fight was my fault though. My wife asked, 'What's on the TV?' I said, 'Dust!'

My advice is..........your wife is always right!!!!

Can't advise you on a bed, but asked our Dr. to write a script for a mattress for me - bad back you know. In FL, this makes it tax due to the script. Saved over $200. This was on top of the 50%+ discount we 'rigorously' negotiated.
Sleep well my friends!

Similar problem a few years ago, although mine (and hers) was temp. We have a king size bed, so I got a separate sheet just for me. She was pissed at first, but quickly grew to really like it. If the mattress is relatively new, I'd just do separate mattress pads, even if they don't line up. When you get a new mattress, if your bed size can accommodate twin mattresses - great. If not, nice firm mattress with no pillow top and get mattress pads. Those pillow tops wear out so quickly, they hold all your sweat and skin cells, and you can't change them. My wife and I like a similar mattress, and we now swear off the pillow top in favor of the easily replaceable pads.

Maybe it's not your mattress. Maybe it's your pillow. Look at this cat. Sleeping like a baby.

For those on this board who recommended "Bed in a Box" years ago --THANK YOU!! My wife and I have never slept (and other things) better. I highly recommend it. Just be sure that you can move that seemingly small (but dense and vacuum-packed) king size bed up to the second floor before you open the compressed mattress.
