OT: Your favorite, or most appreciated WWII flick ??

a minor flood of choices popped into my head when I read the question. I could pick one if I had to, but the list would include: Tora Tora Tora, Patton, Band of Brothers, Dirty Dozen and The Longest Day

A couple of other POW movies:
King Rat, based on James Clavell's own experiences and Speilberg's Empire of The Sun.
And on the seas, The Caine Mutiny & Mr. Roberts. Some acting heavyweights in both casts.

Have you ever seen an old black and white English movie starring Noel Coward called "In which we serve" ?

I agree with some of the others, but here are a few that need mentioning:

Lawrence of Arabia
Bridge on the river Kwai
Paths of glory
The guns of navarone
We were soldiers
Lone survivor

If anyone's interested, there's an excellent WWII Dutch film called Black Book starring Carice Van Houten. She is superb. Dutch resistance v. Nazis. Watched it years ago with subtitles. Dutchman Paul Verhoeven co-wrote and directed (Basic Instinct). Highly recommended.

There's a 2013 movie called "The Railway Man" that focuses on a British serviceman's struggle to deal with his flashbacks of captivity under the Japanese. Well acted, but dealing with PTSD rather than combat action. I'd recommend it however.

My pick is a German film called "Das Boot".
Das Boot is great!

Two great underrated WWII picks that I highly recommend

The Eagle has Landed - Michael Caine was great as the elite SS paratroop commander trying to kill Winston Churchill. Larry Hagman was great as the bumbling American Commander and Donald Sutherland as the IRA/German spy. Great story and acting all around.

Cross of Iron - It is a bloody Sam Peckinpah movie focusing on the German Army on the Eastern Front. Battle scenes are great with real vintage equipment.

I actually like the Devil's Brigade as well. I thought that was good all-around action movie.

Guns of Navarone was very well done as well. Great cast and acting.

Mr. Roberts! While not a combat movie, what an acting tour de force! Hank Fonda at his best. Jack Lemmon was perfect as Ensign Pulver. James Cagney as the palm tree loving captain and The great William Powell in his last role as Doc and Ward Bond thrown is as Dottie! I still get choked up everytime Jack Lemmon reads that last letter from Okinawa describing Doug's fate. Just a PERFECT movie. I can watch it again and again.
