Our defense isn’t good

It didn’t age well, but there is something to be said for starting slow every game. I’m still not sure how I feel about Tom Allen. I’ll let you know after the USC game! 😀

It’s not the Xs and Os, it’s the Jimmys and Joes.

After the usc game you will move the carrot.

This team has many flaws can you imagine if we would have played Alabama or Georgia last nite? We would have been taken to shed and beat by 5 touchdowns, this is not a good team

I have to agree. We have some very good players and some talent holes. The defensive secondary and wide receivers are the holes. Realistically imo our ranking is low teens right now.

Many of the passes were off line. Drew started sharp but got worse as the game progressed.

I struggle watching our defense. We give up way too many 3rd and long conversions and a lot of that is the scheme. We move defenders around a lot and bring pressure from all different places. Sometimes that works but if we don't get the pressure huge areas of real estate are uncovered which exposes us to big plays. We don't seem content giving up 6 yds on 3rd and 10 and forcing a punt. Instead we pin our ears back looking for a sack or turnover.

Reed was once again the leading tackler. He's a good player but I struggle when I see him attacking the LOS with Winston and Deluca injured.

King has been solid at LB. Rojas is going to be good but he's still learning. Depth is a big problem. Who is the next great LB after those guys? Harris looks pretty good at CB and he's only a sophomore. He's going to get better and better. It seems to me that Cam Miller is still struggling. Durant has been great. I hoped for more from Sutton.

With the exception of the first part of the game our OL and DL settled the issue with their football fists. And I loved it. This was an especially satisfying win to me against a team led by a guy who I can’t stand. Bielema fancies himself some sort of old school tough guy who's going to ram it down your throat. But last night the roles got reversed and Bielema got it rammed down his throat. Old school style. So satisfying !!

You don’t think Georgia and Bama fans see a ton of flaws in their teams especially after last night. Apparently Bama’s defense is a lot worse than Kentucky’s.

I'm no Tom Allen fan but he pretty much killed it yesterday.
In the second half.

In the first half Illinois had about 175 yds of offense and had 1st and goal on the PSU 2 yd line. It should have been 14-7 ILL going into halftime but PSU got lucky when ILL imploded with a bad snap, 2 penalties, and a missed FG. It could have been a totally different game.

Yeah, we were lucky there b4 the half and it probably turned the game in our favor. I certainly liked Diaz's agressive style compared to Allen. Until late in the game, we aren't pressuring the QB enough. Run D is very good.

It most definitely is a good team, whether or not it is a great/elite team remains to be seen. The offensive line is real good already, and they are relatively young.

I do like how the schedule plays out, the key is to eliminate dumb mistakes/penalties, improve every game and scheme to get the wide receivers open vs man coverage.

Exact reason I don’t post or even get on this board during a game. Can’t post something stupid if I’m not logged in.

I enjoy following the comments as the game is played. But some people overreact to individual plays and draw overly broad conclusions from them. I think after you watch a game for a half, you have a better feel for it and can be more logical about whether to panic or not.

Personally, I felt good at the half last night. Even with the frustrations of some things and some plays that didn't go right. I felt like we were poised to take control of the game...and we did. Luke Altmyer had played pretty well this year, but you could tell he hadn't seen a D as good as ours. In the 2nd half, the dude looked like the proverbial deer in headlights.

I get tired of the posts after the other team drives down the field and scores on the opening drive and then it’s how we’re a bad team, we’ll never make the playoffs, there are at least 15 teams better than we are. You’d think after all these years posters would be smart enough to realize the first three minutes of the game don’t determine the game. Just relax and watch the game.

Speaking of Georgia & Alabama, that was an incredibly exciting game.

How did the great Crimson Tide give up such a big lead? And the elite Georgia Bulldogs come back to take the lead and give up that huge bonehead play to lose the game? They must all be bums!!! 😏🙄😉

It’s not just determining the game, don’t you know the first three minutes of any game determine the outcome of the whole season? And I guess it’s now safe to say that Georgia’s defense is not good.

It’s always exciting for outside fans to watch a game with no defense…just sucks for their own fans.
Just two weeks ago, that UGA team made up of a bunch of 5 and 4 stars beat a decent and gritty but not great Kentucky 13-12. I only can imagine the reaction of some if PSU won a game like that.

Also, Michigan has made a living the past three seasons by playing games like PSU did last night, and all that they’ve accomplished by doing that is win three Big 10 Championships, make three playoff appearances, and win a National Championship.

We're 31st in the nation in 3rd down conversion defense so I'm not sure what you are watching.

Tom Allen certainly isn’t Manny Diaz. The biggest difference seems to be that we’re all reactionary now while Manny’s defenses were ultra aggressive and set the tone.
Plus if you compare last year's players to this year's players you would conclude that we had more talent last season. This doesn't bode well for the gauntlet ahead.

It seems it always takes Allen a half to adjust :( After he started to switch out of that silly 4-2-5 defense a glorified prevent and went to a variation of the 4-4 and 4-5 at times the D started to kill it.
