What do people think?
The young Alvarez has looked tough so far. RBY has yet to really be challenged apart from a somewhat mediocre performance vs Kramer.
What do people think? Style factors? Predictions?

I'll go RBY with a 4 point win, say 7-3.

WE ARE!!!

I watched a couple of his matches at the Scuffle and thought he looked good. He beat the kid from Pitt, who’s pretty good in his own right. I like RBY in a close one.

Check out Mickey's other matches at the Scuffle. One point win over Witcraft, two point win over Manley, a three point win over VanFleet and what really a one point loss to Alvarez. He really had only one "good" match at the Scuffle. You wrestle too many close ones and some are going to bite you.

Phlliippi has always had a lot of Pletcher in him. Blow out the weakest opponents, clam up against anyone with a pulse. Dating back at least to HS freshman year.

Those types of wins are exactly who he is, not some proof of him having a bad tourney.

I thought RBY really looked good in his last match. Had his speed back!! had he been injured?? I think he is going to open a can of ...... on Rutgers!!

Well, of course he looked good. He wrestled NW’s second stringer. But RBY didn’t look great against the kid from ASU.

I think you have to look at the whole body of work, and unfortunately there’s not much to go on for PSU wrestlers this year. We’ll learn a little more about RBY on Sunday and a lot more about all of them by month end.

Edit: Fixed it.

Sunday...before someone thinks we wrestle Saturday.

Well, Eddy line, I thought my post made clear that I Didnt think RBY looked good Early this season and thought he might not have been healthy. Regardless of the fact that seabass did not wrestle I thought RBY looked like he had his speed back like last year. Positive infinity!! Oh, and they wrestle Sunday.

Another "I would rather watch paint dry" match.

Btw, it seems Pletcher's problem may have been being at the wrong weight class as much as anything judging from his wrestling this year.
if u actually watched that match, even though it’s low scoring, you would see a lot of good scrambles going on.. far from a “paint dry kind of match”.

and regarding Pletcher it’s pretty well known he wasn’t a bonus machine his first few years..it’s just how he wrestles... which was for comparisons sake for Philipi’s “bad tourney” bc he won a bunch of low scoring matches.. he had a “bad tourney” bc he didn’t win as a favorite not bc he won a bunch of close bouts.

After this year, I'm not sure "it was just the way he wrestles". Pletcher looks completely different this year up a class. @pletch5 , you've been supplying him venison from the hunting cabin? Luke looks like a man on a mission.

We r referring to pletcher’s style, how he kept matches close and rarely bonuses his fresh/soph season.. like this isn’t a secret.. obv he moved up weight and has turned on to a completely new lvl his senior year

Have you seen Pletcher wrestle this year. To compare Phillippi to Pletcher is wrongheaded.

Yes I have. Pletcher has mostly opened up this year.

That doesn't erase the last 8+ years of his career. So no, it's not wrong-headed.

Pletcher looks phenomenal. A completely different wrestler this year. Nick has also jumped a level this year. I think we're going to be fortunate to see them battle 3x this season. In the dual and in the Finals at Bigs and NCAAs. Gonna be FUN!!!

Pletcher continued that with a major decision of #4 Moran last night. Definitely a different wrestler at 141. Can't wait to see him vs Lee in the dual and beyond.

I think when he faces someone like Lee who brings it just like he is doing we will see a different pletcher more careful pletcher

Talented opponents do neutralize offense to a degree, causing lower scoring and closer bouts. Normal, I'd say. Trick is to not change your mindset -- stay offensive-minded and the opportunities will come. Going into a shell, changing who you are as a wrestler, rarely works to one's advantage.

I agree. I think Lee has a better tank but needs to wrestle smart. This match will tell us a lot about Lee and whether he jumped levels.

I suspect RBY torches Alvarez. Too quick for him, whether scoring off offense or defense.
Hmm. I must be missing something. I see a fairly close, low scoring affair. From what I’ve seen of Alvarez, he’s a decent scrambler, and I don’t see RBY getting back points. RBY does have a quickness advantage, though that’s true vs virtually all of his opponents.

Agree, and we'll know in a day and a half or so. Anything can happen on the mat.

Hmmm. Talented kid moved up a weight and is more aggressive, stronger, has a much bigger tank... Let's hope Ryan doesn't realize this 'secret' has been staring him in the face all along. I hope John Smith isn't watching either. I have no problem with both ruining their blue chippers with rediculous cuts. I think there is much more to it than just the cut with Pletch this year, but for sure he is a completely different wrestler and has his eyes set on a national championship.

I can't wait for him to run into our buzzsaw. It will be a huge test for sure but I am firmly in the camp that Nick has jumped a level physically and skill wise this year too.

Ryan has had lots of guys move up weights. both Stiebers, both Jordans, Snyder, Myles Martin, Mark Martin, Heflin, Romero ... Hayes when he lost the Avoid Zain and Avoid Jason wrestle-offs ...

IMO the cut or non-cut is a minor factor at most. Most good wrestlers see their bonus rates increase each year; Pletcher's increased some last year and more this year. He's more physically mature, and this is his last chance so it's time to make it happen.

OK. I watched the match.

First period - Tucker had one deep shot, one shallow shot by Alvarez
Second period - Alvarez escapes; one takedown shot by Tucker, Alvarez escape; one half-shot by Alvarez
Third period - Escape by Tucker; two deep shots by Tucker; zero, count 'em, zero shots by Alvarez, even though a takedown could have won the match.

If you think that's "a lot of good scrambles going on", you've been watching Rutgers wrestling too long. Four total takedown attempts by Tucker and two (generously) by Alvarez. Alvarez has very good defense but doesn't commit to takedown attempts (only one serious shot, and even that was a shallow one, in 7 minutes of wrestling). No top game. Still not impressed.

Rutgers week would be soooooo much better if they had some quality for matter to raise his online game to. This week has been abnormally boring.

Also have we figured out why Jersey nick was in Italy?
