Very enlightening article by Lou mostly focusing on Brandon, who is on board of trustees, and his reasoning for investing in football facility upgrades at PSU (Lasch Building project is funded and
study of stadium renovation options to follow). Amazing how much other Big 10 schools have invested (6 schools invested $90 to $270 million) in the last 18 months. It was not clarified where the money was spent at the other school but clearly to compete Short does not think we can fail to invest in facilities and he explains why. Others like Jay Paterno disagree citing high cost of Penn State and need to spend money elsewhere. Nobody is wrong, but clearly if we do not invest in facilities we would fall into lower echelon in Big 10 and State College and surrounding area (less attendance means less spending) would suffer. Nice article. Brandon has an amazing business career after completing a fine NFL career. Fortunately, for PSU, he had worked overseas but has obtained another top level business job and he now lives in the New York area. In the article, his humble upbringings were described. He sure represents a top scholar athlete who is very successful in his post NFL career and is giving back to PSU by his time on the Board of Trustees. Fortunately, for football fans, he continues to be a strong advocate for continuing strong football and athletic programs at PSU which requires investing in buildings-next up is exploring what to do with Beaver Stadium.
Great article. One thought: How many of us have greater loyalty (which often means alumni financial support) to PSU partially or fully because of sports at PSU? I came to PSU for graduate school after leaving UVa which then had a crummy football program. I fell in love with PSU and the football program and many years later visit this site often, go to games, and give some money to PSU(I am not rich!).
