Steveson??

-Had his first 3 regular decisions and gave up his first TD of the season but sure,lets give him OW

Honestly, I think it should have gone to O'Toole. Freshman who didn't give up a point until the Finals then knocked off the returning champ. I think RBY, Carter, or AB could have been in consideration too, between bonus and their Finals competition, they had a heckuva run.

Steveson could have probably collected his OW trophy in January though. Did anyone expect anyone else to get it?

OToole took 3rd last year (technically a Soph) so I was not surprised at all he won and actually was my pick TOO win

A lot of OWs are voted on solely for the story line, not saying I agree with it. The wrestlers I would have in consideration of OW would be in no specific order;

Gable: The most dominant HW maybe to ever step on the mat and only gave up 1 takedown the entire tournament. The problem here is he was the 1 seed coming in with I believe 100% bonus rate. He did what was expected

Lee: Most dominant finals performance. The problem is, he beat the 15 seed. While Clark earned his finals spot, he still wasn’t highly seeded. I know seeds don’t matter, but sometimes they need to be taken into consideration.

RBY: Won the finals going through Desanto and Fix. Fix is a world medalist and couldn’t get a takedown. My problem here would be his semi and finals match ended 3-2. Could have cemented my vote by putting a few more points up against Desanto or Fix.

O’Toole: Probably would have been my vote for the simple fact he was the only wrestler to win a title knocking off the reigning champ.

Starocci: In my opinion the match of the night. The second wrestler to knock off a former champ in the finals, but not the reigning champ. The problem for me here is he won on riding time, and while that is the current set of rules, I take that into account.

Brooks: Very impressive after losing in the BIGs. Controlled the whole match and the only wrestler to beat an Olympic medalist. My problem here is he already beat Amine.

Obviously only one wrestler can win OW. If I was casting a vote, I would look at complete body of work not only in this tournament, but past results against the same opponents. It’s a vote that should not be taken lightly. I don’t necessarily disagree with the award going to Gable, and wouldn’t disagree with it going to any of the above mentioned.

Did anyone score more match points then Gable? I know he scored 72 in his 5 matches. I too think others could have been picked but they gave it to Gable. I'm ok with that. If your a National Champ, you're an outstanding wrestler. Give it to all 10 who really cares.

I got no problem giving it to Gable. Dominant through tournament. And with no real finals surprises or major upsets, he's as worthy as anyone. Wonder if it goes to him if he didn't publicize his retirement intentions? I got OToole and CStar as next up candidates. Both were dominant throughout.

If I base OW wrestler on dominance over quality of field, then it’s hard to argue with Gable.

A bracket with Kerk, Schultz, Parris, Cassioppi and Wood was as good as any. He might not have let it fly but there was never a moment when everyone didn’t know who was going to win.

Yanni was the only champ without a bonus-point victory. I wouldn't have expected that.
