Decided to enlist in PA's finest to squeeze some more info out of you guys.

So help me out what's going on this weekend in terms of qualifying for state. Obviously, I am trying to follow FR's Kemerer and Punxy's Young. Any of you willing to help me out?

here ya go ...

this weekend is regional competition, with the top wrestlers qualifying for States.

Kemerer is competing at 145 in the Class AAA Southwest Regional wrestling tournament. You can follow his performance at this link.

Young is competing at 152 in the Class AAA Northwest Regional wrestling tournament. You can follow his performance at this link.

HT3

For Kemerer the Southwestern Tournament starts on Thursday night and runs through Saturday night. The top 4 placers will advance to the State Tournament in Hershey which is held the following week (March 5 to March 7). Last year only 3 placers advanced from this tournament.

I'm not sure of the details for Kaleb Young Qualifier.

You can also access the state tournament brackets and live updates at this site as well http://live.pa-wrestling.com/

If you go thru the link Needanap provided, you'll find brackets are already posted for Regionals.

When you see the brackets, you'll find a number like 1-1 in front of each wrestler's name. That's just how he placed in the previous week's tourney.

For Kemerer (SW AAA 145): He got the #1 seed. The only guy who should threaten him is Jarod Verkleeren, the #2 seed, who's also nationally ranked. Kemerer will be favored, but that should be a good match. They've faced 2x this year, Kemerer winning 5-4 and 7-4.

For Young (NW AAA 152): He got the #3 seed. I wouldn't be too concerned about that -- it's due to lack of matches (he's 12-0). Swartwood (#2 seed) and Probst (#1 seed) are both state qualifiers. Swartwood has beaten Probst 2x this year. Young should win.

NOTE: not **that** Jordan Oliver in Young's bracket.

Oh, man, things keep changing.

I first get bwi and can't find how to get to the wrestling board. Then I get there and I find out I have to register. (again? after about 200 years?) Whatever.

I can't even remember if I've been FR here or Front Range as I have been since the old, old days, so now I'm Front Range and, if I have to remember my damned password each time, I probably will post even less than I've been. Tom, please watch after other old farts like "PSU&Trout" and make sure he transitions. Hell, after all these years, even NoVa Lion is getting old!

Anyway, the main reason I wanted to take these many precious minutes of my remaining life was to thank you for that (those) link. I will use those a lot over the next two weeks.

My only wish is that the new regime/format/brave world would require lazy assholes to add their own new unique "subject" line instead of just recycling the old one. Then I would read more posts here than the first in a string and Tom McAndrew's.

Love ya, man.

oh my ...

Front Range, always a pleasure to hear from you.

I'm not sure what issue you ran into regarding having to register. Rivals has been planning to update the message boards for some time. The rollout of the upgrade has taken far longer than anticipated, and the preparations for this have also caused a number of hiccups, so to speak. One of the intermittent issues is the need to log in. It seems to be a function of the device you're using to access the board, the browser, etc. I've only experienced it a few times, though based on posts over the past few months some folks have experienced it far more frequently.

So it appears that you registered a new handle of FrontRange. Your previous handle was Front Range. If you don't recall your password, you should contact Rivals and see if they can assist you. You can contact them at:

1-866-2-RIVALS

They are open Mon. - Fri., 8 am to 8 pm, CST

I concur with you on wishing that any board upgrade would require folks to create a unique Subject line. Only time will tell if that's part of the upgrade or not.

Enjoy following the Regionals and then the States.

Tom

Re: oh my ...

I'm one of those people too lazy to change the subject. More often than not, it doesn't matter to what I'm posting.

You can fix that by going to Style 2, whatever that's called. You don't get to see replies lined up as replies, but it's fairly easy to figure that out.

Good to hear there's a new rollout coming. I hope it's like Black Shoe Diaries. Replies indented so it's easy to track sub-threads. And new posts highlighted yellow, so you can easy see what's new. (I'm also quite addicted to typing the "z" key to auto-scroll to the next new post.)

Re: Oh, man, things keep changing.

FR, I think I already got old a while ago, I just haven't caught up to you. I wish more people used the quote function on here so you can tell who someone is responding to but you do have the option here of switching to thread view, which way back when was the only option.

Thanks to you, Needanap, and Tom on all of this information. Trying to follow so many different state tournaments and qualifiers I am glad you guys were able to be a great resource for me.

I am a little familiar with Verkleenren, I remember the two teams met in the state dual qualifiers as well. I also think I saw that Willie Saylor said that he's one of the biggest threat to Kemerer wrestling the DD USA team.

Is Duggan in AAA or AA? I saw that he dropped down from 152.

HT3 -- Verkleren is a sophomore from Bell Vernon and was on the Fila Cadet World team. In the 2 previous matches this year, Kemerer was clearly the better wrestler. At the end of the first match (last 20 seconds) Kemerer was up 5 - 2 and Verkleren countered Kemerer's last shot and got the take down. Verkleren is very good and I would expect he will be ranked near the top at 152 next year. As a sophomore he will not be eligible to participate in the Dapper Dan (Seniors only)

At the State's next week the others to watch for are Haden Hidlay and Patrick Duggan. Both are ranked in the top 10 nationally and are very good. Hidlay (NC State commit) and Duggan (WVU Commit) are both returning state placers. Hidlay beat Verkleren in a very close match in the semis at PowerAde and Kemerer beat Hidlay in the finals. I'm sure Kemerer and Duggan have faced each other before, but I'm not sure of the details.

Kaleb Young will likely be the 3rd seed at 152 (AAA) for states behind Vincenzo Joseph (PSU) and Josh Maruca (ASU and Kemerer's team mate at Franklin Regional). Joseph and Maruca are both Seniors.

Thanks for the background on Verkleren. I knew he was an underclassmen, I just meant if he beat Kemerer Dapper Dan might go with Duggan or Hilday. I am not a DD expert though.

PA states does not seed. Sectionals, Districts, and Regionals do seed. For states, PIAA uses pre-drawn brackets -- meaning PA already has brackets assigned to each weight, based upon regional places but without names. Brackets kept private until after all regional results known, then will fill in the names. (For example, Round 1 NE1 vs. SW3 known but not published, names not yet available.)

Since PA AAA has 5 Regionals, Cenzo and Young could meet in quarters even if they're both regional champs. Or Young and Maruca could meet in quarters even if Young is a regional champ and Maruca regional runner-up to Cenzo. Such is life at Hershey.

The only thing we know about the brackets: Regional champs and runners-up are separated until the state finals. For example, SW1 Kemerer won't face SW2 Verkleeren at Hershey until the finals or in consis.

Anyway ...

145 AAA and 152 AAA are 2 of the biggest meat-grinder weights in the country this year. Guessing orders (as best as possible without filled-in brackets):

145: 1 Kemerer, 2 Duggan, 3 Hidlay, 4 Jarod Verkleeren, 5 Jimmy Saylor (yes, Willie's cousin), 6 Riley Barth.

152: 1 Cenzo, 2-3 Maruca and Mike Labriola, 4 Young, 5 Derek Verkleeren, 6 Cade Moisey. (Labriola beat Maruca in the state duals semifinals.) I think Young could finish anywhere from 2 to 4, clear step after Cenzo and again after 4th.

The pecking order for Dapper Dan 145 is probably:
1. Kemerer if he wins states
2. Duggan if he wins states
3. Kent Lane (Southern Columbia) if Kemerer and Duggan don't.

Lane is the odds-on AA favorite, a returning state runner-up, Lehigh commit, experienced nationally.

145 has 4 great kids that you listed then a bit of a drop off after. I would be surprised to see outside of that group in the finals.

152 is a GREAT weight class this year in PA AAA. I could see as many as 7 different kids in the finals. I think you got the top 4 right, but I would have Ethan Smith, Keller Watkins and Nino Bonnacorsi all significantly higher than the older Verkleeren and Moisey and all three of those kids could crash the party in the top 4. Cenzo is a clear favorite but I would not want to predict a finish among the others. I would lean towards Maruca at 2 as sometimes he wrestles at a level the others haven't shown yet.
