PA HS Wrestling thread

You mean Bald Eagle Nittany lost to Brookville. BEA was a separate school.
Bald eagle nittany was good every freaking year. That school was consistent if nothing else with big Biff coaching. They combined with lock haven and sugar valley shortly after that to become central mountain

Lock Haven HS and BEN were like 5 miles from each other and were rivals. Would love to hear stories of the first year of combining both with teachers and students, I’m guessing the sides remained siloed for a while

BEN was at its best when it was part of the West Branch Conference and was coached by George Custer. Big Biff was one of Custer's many talented wrestlers. Custer's teams dominated the WBC over strong teams from Muncy and Hughesville.

BEN's football team was even more dominant, going undefeated for many years under legendary coach Walt Diehl. My memory may be a bit faulty, but after going 55-0 over several seasons BEN was invited to play a Florida school in connection with Orange Bowl festivities. Unfortunately, the PIAA denied BEN permission to travel.

Was the Wright, Millard, Maney brothers always from BEA. Did they start there in kindergarten? I don’t know the back story at all

Not to mention when we played the 9th grade BEN football team they all had beards. Wtf these kids were humongous. We tied them 6-6 because I fumbled the ball running for a touchdown with nobody within 20 yards. Swear to God the ball just fell out of my arm weirdest thing ever

Little before my time I remember BEN had a junior varsity program that was ridiculous they had so many kids wrestling. Kids were wearing singlets with diapers underneath that's how young they started

One of the blowbacks from doing that was a serious lack of school pride. Central mountain still struggles to gain a big loyal following. Grandpa's and grandmas and even moms and dads were from either lock haven or BEN. Slowly coming around but somebody needs to figure out this football program. With the amount of kids and talent they have they should be destroying other teams. The parents will not allow coaches to be hard on kids at any level. It's like the kids are happy just playing and losing its ridiculous.

That is not uncommon these days.

How do you think BEA and Brookville from 1999 stack up against Becca a few years ago or FCA, Mcort?
If BEA could have put together a team from BEA, PO, SC and Bellefonte they could have wrestled McCort and FCA without being embarrassed.

The Wright boys could have just as easily wrestled at SC, but they came along later than 1999. The Maneys are from Port Matilda ((I think), but straight up Bald Eagle family. The Millard boys' father is a preacher who moved into the area when Josh was maybe 12th grade and Justin was a freshman. Corey Guenot's dad wrestled for BEA back in the early 70s.
That BEA was just damn good and tough as freaking nails. A strong relection of their coach.

Interesting mix of #1’s in 3A
D11 - 5 (2 Northampton, Emmaus, Nazareth, Beca)
D7 - 3 (Connellsville, Thomas Jefferson, Ringgold)
D1 - 3 (CRS, OJR, Hatboro-Horsham)
D6 - 1 (State College)
D2 - 1 (Abington Heights)

Karenbaur is a little beast. I watched him coming through the ranks. Little Bachman is special talent too

Hoare is going to be a problem in AA for the next four years. He reminds me of Austin Johnson from Muncy

Exciting to see!

RIP Coach Marty Ruley
I was glad to see that Chase stayed home for HS. One of the last top tier D10 freshmen to have a similar amount of fanfare was Cole Rees and he wound up going to Sem. Before him was Spencer Lee who would’ve been at Saegertown with Coach Mulligan. Not begrudging either of them for their routes. It’s just fun to see big time youth studs get to make a name for their small towns

I am sure Reynolds offered him a nice package
The problem there is that Chase has been with Bad Karma for a long time now. BK also severed a bunch of ties with Reynolds after CRTC moved in. BK now has good ties with Coach Phipps in Grove City and Coach Hahsey up at Prep

This makes sense now. Steen used to be the feeder for Reynolds, that fell through. PSU got Gary over Pitt and Reynolds lost the BK kids. I bet they wish that didn’t happen. Chase would be a solid pickup.

Tyler could be a great pickup. He doesn't seem to project at 133, but if he can stay there or 141 he'll be in the mix. His body type might hurt him some of he ends up at 149.

Unreal end to the Easton vs Nazareth dual. Easton wins the last match to secure the team win, then gets hit for a team point because of the headgear toss and it results in a team loss instead. Mineo is saying the ref went to Nazareth, no clue on the validity of that claim

It doesn't matter if he went to Nazareth, by rule it is 100% the right call.

I think he was a former state champ from there.
It’s Mark Getz. State champ at Nazareth in 94 maybe?

It’s been pointed out a lot on Twitter that they updated the casebook this year, and Scenario C is pretty dead-on applicable about this being a “toss” not a “throw” and the referee not deducting a team point. But the call was the call, Blue Eagles win. Wild way to end a dual, can’t say I’ve ever seen anything like it. What will be frustrating is if Easton ends up with the 4 seed at D11 duals and on the same side as Becahi based on this loss.

The finish will get all of the attention, but it was a great dual. Packed house at Nazareth, both teams had kids wrestle really well. Nazareths stars were excellent - particularly the Campbell kid at 139. Easton won both big toss ups, got a majors in two bouts where they were slight favorites (bonus in five of their six wins). Before the end, I though the story would be the massive fall from a first-year varsity kid at 152, in what was on paper a toss up.

Here’s hoping there is a rematch in February with a trip to Hershey on the line.

For Harrisburg area fans, Asher Cunningham of State College will be wrestling at Cedar Cliff Thursday night.
I should also mention here that State College is in a dual meet with Central Dauphin in Rec Hall next Tuesday, Dec 17. The Nickal connection paying some early dividends, I suppose.
