Paris freestyle tournament

Remember after Nico won the NCAA championship he said his next goal is world and Olympic gold. Anyone have any thoughts on his chances? I admit I don't follow freestyle as closely as maybe I should so curious what some of you knowledgeable fans think.

His style is more friendly to freestyle than others, the transition will not be so bad as he switches full-time. Not so long ago he lost 2-1 to Ramos. Needs work but I would put his chances of freestyle success, in whatever form, at pretty high

He doesn't have the classic body type for FS but lots of the US guys don't. It is encouraging to see him improve from where he was when he first started FS. His single-mindedness that led him to an NCAA title after finishing 2, 2, 3 should go a long way.

If, say, Nico were to not win a spot on the US team, could he wrestle for Greece?
Anyone know if he would consider it?

Nico should be up shortly on Mat B. (about 11:30 am)

David Taylor, Dan Vallimont, and Matt Brown (vs Kyle Dake) also competing in Paris.

Where does the money come from for the postgrad wrestlers to take these trips, that I would imagine are expensive?

Nico up 1-0 after 1st. Nico is doing all of the work, scored on passivity.

DT looking large and pushing pace. HUN tired already. after 1 its 3-0 DT in this 1/4 match

in the 2nd pd DT got 1PT a TD and 2 2pt exposures. Looked great, scoring of his action and the HUN shots. on to the semis w the 10-0 win

HUN was world #20

Really good showing for the USA! Just noticed Jayson Ness beat Ramos. It seems like a ton of the US guys got matched up early.

Wonder why Ramos didn't go 57 kg. I thought he said he was focusing on going 57 after Brewer beat him at WNO. I figure 57 is between him and Nico.

Ramos Mat A (Won by Injury Default)
J. Ness Mat B

Ness had nice exposure for 2 but was then taken down and pushed out. Down 2-3 at break. It got ugly, loses 9-2.

Taylor vs. Perry on Mat B now.

4-2 Perry after 1. Perry pushout. Taylor takedown on an ankle pick immediately off a whistle, but Perry also got 2 on an elevator. Perry another pushout, had Taylor locked in a near-side cradle.

Perry looks much stronger than Taylor.

DT down 2-4 after 1. gave up 1 on shot clock, then got his own TD but got wrenched over for exposure. then in on another shot and perry locked a cradle up. luckily he went OB for 1.

so down 2-4

Taylor now up 6-4 on a pair of go-behinds. Perry looks like he's gassing some.

3 TDs off great motion by DT gets him the gold 8-5. Perry was very game today w 1 more POs for is additional point.

Dake vs Ringer coming up.

Final 8-5 Taylor.

Pushout for Perry with 20 sec left, Taylor took an ill-advised shot near the edge and got spun out of bounds.

Then Perry took a desperation ankle pick shot from too far out, Taylor easily went behind for the final takedown with 5 sec left.

Perry looks stronger than just about everyone. He's gotten better over the last few years. Remember seeing Ed pick him apart with an approach similar to DT's here. A number of times Perry tried to go behind on failed shots and he'd probably have gotten behind on anyone else but DT had great reactions to all those direction changes.

I think DT is filling in quite nicely. Getting thick all around!

I thought the caution was first criteria when tied. Noticed Taylor's score was underlined. Did they change that?

kind of depressing that a free tournament broadcast world wide gets ~2k in viewers. I know its not a big tournament and its a sunday and our sport is small, but much more work is needed.

Note about mat assignments: they're listed on the UWW website linked at the top of this thread. Go to the weight class, then go to results, and it's there.

True. But what I meant was that Perry was clearly overpowering Taylor. Other than the ankle pick takedown (which was an immediate off-the-whistle move), Taylor generated no offense in the first period -- he was trying, just nothing was working.

To Perry's credit, he is considerably improved over his college career. It wasn't just outmuscling Taylor -- Perry is a good wrestler at this level.

understand and wasn't trying to argue. I'm sure DT and Perry practice quite a bit together as well when out at the OTC
