Paterno in 1995: "We ... Penn State will honor this team as national champions."

I saw something on Twitter that jogged my mind about the '94 team and I came across this quote from Paterno.

It seems like he was saying the same thing UCF was saying a year ago. And then UCF made good on that pledge by calling its team the national champions. Forgive my ignorance, honestly, but has Penn State taken similar measures in being so defiant that it was the '94 national champs?

I want to follow up with this video:

Penn State's scoreboard for the next season's opener read "The New York Times National Champions," which is nice. But how has Penn State gone about upholding that in recent years?

They post the year's of Undefeated or Championship teams (and the 2012 team) on the East Suite's Façade.
This and this alone would have sufficed as a response. I'm not allowed to ask questions?

A) What TF else would you want to do?
B) Who TF cares?
I'm more curious than anything. You're familiar with what UCF did, right? They had their players and coaches and front office personnel all over ESPN and radio and papers and online, screaming from the top of the building for legitimacy. Heck, they even sell national champion merch on their website. And they had a parade. And a trophy. And championship rings.

Remember ruining my shorty-shorts that game... Byron Hanspard for TT had a whale of a game.... also marked the debut of the Nike swoosh™️ on the left pectoral... hard to believe it’s been on there for 24+ Yrs

You’re the “reinvented” 78SweetRevenge, aren’t you? I can tell by the tone.

that crap is all stupid

We should claim 1994. They're ALL mythical National Championships anyway.

And that goes for even today, despite the 4 team playoff.

Ohio State in 2014? They're only mythical National Champions because some committee met behind a bunch of closed doors and for opaque reasons decided to include them instead of TCU or Baylor in the playoff.

Clemson in 2016? They're only mythical National Champions because some committee met behind a bunch of closed doors and for opaque reasons decided to give them a cupcake semifinal match-up with Ohio State, who was included in the playoff at the expense of the actual B1G champions.

Alabama in 2017? They're only mythical National Champions because some committee met behind a bunch of closed doors and for opaque reasons decided to include them instead of Ohio State or UCF in the playoff.

Et cetera, et cetera.

Until there is full access for all 130 FBS teams, they are all mythical. And we may as well go claiming as many as we want to claim.

That's sort of my point.

Penn State is certainly not the only school that's been robbed of a title. But the 1969 and 1994 teams (and maybe one or a few of the other undefeated teams) have a much better case than 2017 UCF. But UCF sort of rocked the boat last year when it went on its all-out "we are national champs" thing, which is something I didn't recall seeing all that much in the past. And then, bam, I came across Paterno's "We will honor this team as national champions" quote and it got me thinking.

We should have done it right away. Do it 24 years after the fact and it feels a bit like "retroactive Championship inflation."

But hey 24 years is nothing compared to 71 years. Oklahoma State claimed a 1945 National Championship in 2016!

Unless and until there is a legit playoff system, any undefeated team has as much right as any other to crown themselves.

PSU has been screwed over more than any other program over the years, so how any Penn State fan can disagree escapes me.

Was at that Game as a student....remember it well "ZACH THOMAS on the STOP" stills rings in my head-must have had 20 tackles.

New York Times? Damn, there actually was an era when the major media centers of the Northeast did not completely despise Penn State Football.

I met a member of the '94 squad a few months ago. He told me Joe had National Champion rings made for everyone.

Didn’t Bobby Engram fumble 2 punts which gave TT great field position?

And that's never been the Penn State way of doing things. I've always wondered if that's partly not due to the Quaker influence in PA.

As I tell my buddies and anyone else, I would've spotted Nebraska two touchdowns on a neutral field.
