Paul Finebaum’s Hate For Michigan Reaches New Heights

In what’s news to no one, Paul Finebaum doesn’t like the football team from the University of Michigan. But the talk-show host took his distaste for the Wolverines – and especially their fans – to a new level on Thursday in an appearance on ESPN radio’s “Mike and Mike.”

Finebaum began his segment by declaring a prior caller couldn’t have been a Michigan fan, as the caller so claimed, because the caller displayed a “modicum of humility.”

“And I’ve never met a Michigan fan that had an ounce of humility or didn’t think his team was the greatest of all time, regardless of their record,” Finebaum said. “Especially since Jim Harbaugh arrived.”

Given this unprompted rant, Finebuam was then asked to name the most arrogant fan base in college football.

“Michigan fans lately have been the worst,” he replied. “Because they have won, let’s see, half a national championship in about 60 years, and they talk like they’re Alabama, Ohio State, [USC], Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Penn State wrapped into one.”

The Wolverines’ last national championship came in 1997, when they went 12-0 and finished No. 1 in the A.P. poll. They were bested by Nebraska, however, in the final coaches poll. Prior to 1997, Michigan hadn’t won a national championship since 1948.

Finebaum has been accused of being a mouthpiece for the SEC, and he admitted on Thursday he may be “tone deaf” to Alabama fans because he used to live near Tuscaloosa. But he made it clear his stance on Michigan fans is uncompromising.

“You’re not going to be able to move me on this,” he said.

When asked to compare fans of Notre Dame and Michigan, Finebaum once again scorched those of the Wolverines.

“I respect Notre Dame. I don’t respect Michigan. Notre Dame stands for something. Notre Dame doesn’t think it’s better than everyone else because it has a record. It, for the most part, has stood on integrity and tradition. Michigan thinks its better than everyone else, and I don’t understand why.

“It’s a good school. But it’s not Harvard, it’s not Princeton, it’s the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. So, I just get freaked out when Michigan fans walk around like they’ve done something.

“When Harbaugh showed up, it gave them a sense of entitlement that they really haven’t earned. Harbaugh’s a very good coach, he’s one of the best coaches in the country. He’s yet to beat his chief rival [Urban Meyer], he’s yet to win a championship in two years, and I’m sure in two more years, if he hasn’t done that, he’ll kick the lockers and walk out and go back to the NFL. But right now, to me, they don’t have a seat at the big boy table.”

Michigan can claim 11 national titles, but just one in the past 68 years.

“It’s always something with Michigan. They win half a championship, then they go through these variety of coaching changes and then they bring Harbaugh in and he loses the biggest game of the year and goes crazy over the officiating,” Finebaum said, referring to Michigan’s loss to Ohio State in November, after which Harbaugh blasted the referees.

“I feel sorry for the official’s family’s in the bowl game on Friday night because I’m sure he’s already researching them, trying to find someone to blame if the game doesn’t go his way,” Finebaum added.

Michigan takes on Florida State in the Orange Bowl on Friday. It’s safe to assume who Finebaum will be rooting for.

The man speaketh the truth. Growing up in Western PA before Penn State entered the BIG, I had never heard of tOSU or Michigan. Probably hard for fans of those schools to imagine, but they were Midwestern schools that weren't on TV where I grew up. Then Penn State enters the league and al of a sudden Michigan fans are acting like they're the be all, end all of college football. Then I looked into their history a bit and realized that their record was largely built during the years of the little 8 big 2, followed by a loss in the Rose Bowl.

Yeah. Seriously. They weren't on TV. They weren't in the national title hunt those years. No one I knew rooted for or wore tOSU or Michigan gear, so why would I have heard of them?

This was also before the interwebs. I knew of Penn State and the schools Penn State played and other major programs like Alabama, Miami - and Penn State played those schools a few times during those years - USC, ND etc. tOSU and Michigan, not so much. I may have seen them on TV in passing but never took notice or paid attention to them.

First I've seen this and I have to say I love it.
I've seen Finebaum on one of the ESPN shows and I thought he was pretty good.

The man speaketh the truth. Growing up in Western PA before Penn State entered the BIG, I had never heard of tOSU or Michigan. I grew up in western PA and I heard of them. One of my buddies was a big Michigan fan and was obnoxious even at a young age so I started hating them early in life. I didn't pay much attention to Ohio State because to me they were just a boring, Midwest school that played a bunch of other boring Midwest schools that no one really cared about. But I certainly didn't view OSU or Michigan as a Mecca of college football.

Ah, okay. I didn't know anybody who was a fan of either team. Where I grew up we argued over Pitt and Penn State and otherwise there was the odd ND fan that everyone rolled their eyes at (heh). I'm sure my dad knew of them as he watched a lot of football - college and pro. Also, when I grew up basic cable had just come into being and the number of games and exposure for a lot of schools wasn't anything like it is today, and I just don't recall ever seeing them on TV. Granted, I didn't follow sports like a lot of guys. If Penn State wasn't playing I generally wasn't interested, so that probably had a lot to do with it too.

Step...me thinks you are gonna have to get Finebaum one of those nice cigars you like to smoke!

Finebaum is a stooge. Our antipathy for Michigan aside, he's talking like a man with a paper azzhole. Credit teams who deserve credit. We've been on the wrong side of this since forever. What Michigan did or didn't do X-number of years ago shouldn't matter. This year is this year. That said, I'm not rooting for them.

Finebaum is really good. He has been fair to Penn State in my opinion...in fact has had Jay Paterno on his radio show several times in past few years and gave Jay a chance to shed some truth to the false ESPN narrative. I think Finebaum is very fair and is a good ambassador for college football.

His comments on scUM are spot on.

Yes, he has said some positive things. When the SHTF he rolls the other way, much like our writers, such as Mr. Collins. Looka, I get it, it's tough to cover PSU, especially now.

In the 25 years prior to Penn State football entering the Big10 the conference had won zero national championships, had played for zero national championships and had won the Rose Bowl 7 times. Nationally they were a good basketball conference but Big10 football, without Penn State's entry they were headed to MAC status.

Paul is kinda strange and an SEC HOMER but not necessarily a bad analyst. I believe he is spot on about SCUM and their fans.

I know exactly where you are coming. I never heard of Penn State football until my freshman year at PSU. People today don't understand that. In my senior year, I was actually recurited by PSU after I had made two touchdowns and two interceptions against Dallas HS. I actually did not know anything about football at PSU.

Tough way to loose when the ref doesn't call an encroachment penelty on FSU. Those incompetent referees.

Well, we will hear soon enough if Harbaugh went after the refs in post game comments again. ;)

I totally agree with Finebaum. I started attending college football games back in 1973, when my Dad took me to my first PSU game when I was 8 years old. I can not even count the number of college games I've attended over the last 40+ years. I have had the privilege of seeing just about every major program in person -- thus experiencing their fan base -- : ND, Michigan, Ohio State, Nebraska, Georgia, USC, Miami, Bama, Auburn, Tenn, Texas, T A&M, LSU, Florida, Wisconsin, Oklahoma....

From my own experience, I can say that Finebaum is 100% correct. Michigan fans have an arrogance. It's hard to describe unless you've experienced it in person, but it is definitely an arrogance or entitlement. A feeling that they honestly believe they are "better" than you.

Other fan bases may be jerks and jack-asses (Ohio State, Miami, Georgia) .... But it is typically the low-brow, low-class fans of that program that do not reflect the overall core. The overall core of Michigan fans are arrogant and entitled.

And how did your meeting with RIP Engle go?
