Penn State - 2017 NCAA Wrestling National Champs! Again!

Chance to break our school total points record from 2012 (143) and our individual champion record of 3 from the same year. Really it will just be setting the bar for next year.

Did it!

I-Mar was a two time defending National Champion! Later in the Championship, Bo Nickal took out 2 time defending National Champion Gabe Dean @184! PSU won Individual Championships at half of the 10 weight classes and tied the all-time record for Individual Champions, 5: 149 - Zane Retherford (rsJR), 157 - Jason Nolf (rsSO), 165 - Vincenzo Joseph (rsFR), 174 - Mark Hall (trFR) and 184 - Bo Nickal (rsSO).....and injured trFR Nick Suriano who couldn't compete because of his injury incurred the match before the post-season Majored the eventual champion, Darien Cruz, of Lehigh in the PSU-Lehigh Dual.

Amazing that Penn State has never had a freshman national champ before and last night they had two.

Hall is about to start of reign of supremacy on NCAA wrestling.

As great as Taylor and Ruth were, Retherford, Nolf, and Hall may be even more individually dominant before their careers are over.

Has IMar ever lost by fall?

last year, in the PSU - Illini dual, PSU's Jason Nolf pinned him. That, and his loss to Vincenzo Joseph, are the only 2 losses of his college career -- both by PSUers, and both by pin.

Interesting, last year Nolf pinned IMar, and yet IMar won in OT at the B1G tourney and won narrowly in the NCAAs.

This year, it was the opposite. IMar defeated Joseph in the PSU - Illini dual, and at B1Gs, but lost to him in the NCAA finals.

Right, thanks! I totally forgot Nolf's win was by fall. Joseph's strength is really impressive

After the Hall beat the guy from Tosu last night, they showed the Tosu coach yell something. Does anyone know what he yelled and who he was yelling at? As I recall, the final period was a bit slow and there was talk of a possible stall warning against Hall. Was the Tosu coach pissed that Hall wasn't called for stalling? Of course, Hall got a takedown in the final seconds.

So what was with the Tosu coach?

He had a stall warning against him already; another would have been a point. I don't think another one should have been called but he also didn't take a shot until like 15 seconds left when he got the takedown, which sort of validates the no call, but I could see why they wanted one.

Thanks. I figured it likely had to do with the stalling issue, but I couldn't make out what the Tosu coach actually yelled.

can some of the wrestling hardcores tell me why not all of the PAC 10 has wrestling. Also looks like the SEC does not have wrestling. Why is this??? I know the SEC does not have men's soccer. Is it a title 9 scholarship issue?

Missouri is in the SEC. They finished 5th this year, had two finalists and crowned J'Den Cox a Champion at 197. (Nolf beat their other finalist Lavallie, by Major Decision.)

Cox is an Olympic Bronze medalist for the USA and by all appearances, a really nice guy, who is a professional level singer and guitar-playing musician. His Mom did a great job singing the National Anthem at the NCAA Tourney, so he naturally comes by his Renaissance Man music abilities.

Missouri was a longstanding wrestling school from the old Big 8 and recent Big 12. They bolted to the SEC for the money, but have kept their wrestling tradition alive as the lone SEC team that wrestles, iirc.
