Basketball Penn State gets past sluggish start, turnovers to beat Northwestern 67-65

Our star player stunk. Our hottest player down the stretch, Wynter, had 3 points and fouled out. We missed 11 free throws, and ran absolutely no offense other than dribbling the ball until we took a bad shot or turned it over, and still ended up winning an ugly game. Funk and Lundy continue to hit big shots, but give credit to the young freshman, Kanye Clary. His 11 points and 0 turnovers were huge.

Clary is quick as a cat…..a very fast cat ! Hope he plays a lot tomorrow and gets more experience and confidence for the big dance.

Gritty not pretty embodies this team perfectly. They seriously need work on the free throw line but for now they keep finding a way to win. Idc which guy steps up, as long as someone does. Let’s keep it going!

A combination of nerves in a big game, tired minds and tired legs from a long tough stretch where every game mattered to them going to the NCAA tournament. We shot free throws real well all year long, and the best thing for them to improve will be a few days off to rest.

He’s going to be a player next year.
Yesterday I scribbled down our prospective depth chart for next year not including incoming freshmen.

Kebba as starter and Lilley as back up in the post may be ok...assuming that each matures. Dorsey is a question mark or could play a role like Myles. Portal help here is obvious...especially if Dorsey leaves.

While Seth was tanking late in the year, many on the Board speculated he was gone. I think that Shrew has a chance at keeping him with a prescribed plan to address his draft weaknesses. With the late success he and the team are having I'd put his return at 75% (just my gut). He is critical as a proven scorer and defender. He also would be our leader.

Assuming a similar 3 guard rotation, I like Clary and Mahaffey as the point and stretch. There will be growing pains, but they each bring skills that we haven't had much of before. Kanye is fast and can be a scorer in the paint. Mahaffey can dribble and sky.

The big question is at 2...Johnson has shown flashes offensively but is inconsistent and a defensive liability. Like Dorsey, his future is tbd, but if he stays he may contribute...but doesn't feel like a Big Ten starter. Brown could/should emerge here too, but will have to prove his recruiting rating. The freshmen have an opening here.

With Seth, we could maybe flirt with .500 like we did this year. Without, it will be a lot of learning.Low scoring ugly wins like last night will be our recipe.

This run only raises Shrew's market value. If he leaves for ND or Gtown, which I think is more likely than not, then everything goes out the window. Lundy will not stay for another new coach. Our recruits may follow Shrew as may the freshmen who committed to him. Hopefully that doesn't come to pass.

Let's enjoy the ride now and hope that our AD invests in hoops. Shrew coukd be a Bo Ryan or Dick Bennett type who can win without 4 and 5 stars. He and his Philly based staff can continue to grow us there and plug in Midwestern guys from his roits.

Beat Indiana!

I think we may lose Lundy now that he has made the tournament.
Unfortunately Dallion Johnson has lost thus year for some reason. I see him bolting. He was a liability his freshman year defensively, but no longer is. He is quick enough to stay with most guards, and has the smarts for the game. He also has a great shot, but until given time will be consistent.
I think Dorsey may bolt also, but if not he can be a good stretch 4. He has the skills and the shot, just not the confidence. Playing time will change that.
I like Brown's all around game and will be a solid player. I really like of what I have followed of Imes. Solid body, great head for the game, and unlimited range. All three freshman will help us.
That leaves at least 2 or 3 spots for the portal. Shrew has done quite well with the portal. Things should be decent next year.

Johnson takes too long to get his shot off….he’s fine if he has an hour and a half to set up. He needs a quicker release.

He was Mass. Gatorade player of the year and set his high school scoring record. Don't do those things if it takes you a hour and a half to get a shot off.

Not even in high school. Coached there for years and you can't. The kind can play, and will especially at a bit smaller college.
You certainly can especially in smaller areas. A D-1 level guy can go a whole season without facing another D-1 level athlete, so the speed of the defenders is not anywhere near what they would face at the Big 10 level.

Keep trying, but no. You will never be able to set your school scoring record if you are slow and take an hour and a half to get a shot off unless you are a dominat post player.
Dalliance had very little problems getting hi shot off last year where he hit %37 of his threes

Yes you will…I know multiple players who set their school scoring record and never even made it to D-1.
