FB Recruiting Penn State lands Troy University Transfer WR Devonte Ross

With the addition of Ross, that now brings Penn State up to 138 total players for the 2025 roster.

The new rules state that 105 is the new max and the roster needs to be cut down to 105 by kickoff 2025.

As I’ve said a few times, we’re going to see at least a dozen players leave via the portal. Probably four or five of them will be wide receivers, and unfortunately, another dozen will be the walk-ons.

We’ll be fine getting to 105
No kidding. My post is in reference to walk on's not being part of the 105 due to expansion of scholarships, and those walk on decisions being the flexibility tha allows the staff to go after whoever they need now within the portal to address needs.....

It would be tough to remember all those names!

Between walk-on’s and specialists such as punters kickers and long snappers, that’s at least two dozen kids.

My guess is that all of the walk-ons save for a few will be gone, and I do not believe that we will carry nearly as manyspecialists, no need for four kickers anymore.

I don’t believe that the wide receiver room will be as big as it has recently as well, going to need to keep other big bodies so no more having 12+ scholarship wide receivers.

Gotta keep a couple ST kids though
They'll run off who they want to run off. Not a big deal.

A team can't afford not to have backup kickers.

If PSU had 12+ scholarship WR's with a 85 scholarship limit they will more than likely have at least that amount with a 105 limit.

Bottom line is that in going from 85 scholarships to potentially 105 there are 20 more scholarships that can be given out. Those 20 will be spread out and possibly some bias towards positions that are harder to correlate high outcome as players develop (OL) and positions where PSU has a good number of players but where recent poor evaluations and/or sub par recruiting success have resulted in poor performance on the field (WR). It also makes sense to use an extra scholarship on positions where injuries can take out a critical player and disproportionately impact team performance such as QB and RB but with the transfer environment those positions may have to be over recruited yearly. Should be interesting to see how Franklin approaches this new structure.

Sure, they’ll have a back up kicker and a backup punter, but they won’t have 10 roster spots for three specialist positions. My guess is that there will be two long snappers two punters and probably three kickers.

I believe they have 12 scholarship wide receivers right now, that’s probably the number that they’ll stay with considering wide receivers are going to cost more money through NIL and we have an exceptionally talented group of tight ends.

Roughly about 20 of the roster spots will be taken up by OL, 12 wr, 6 te, 6 rb, 4 qb, 7 specialists, 16DL, 10 lb, and 16 db. That leaves 8 spots to add however coach deems necessary.

No. He only torched Iowa. It would only be good if he could do that against the Chiefs. And even then I’m sure someone would nitpick. Calling Lando.
Well, that might hold more water before this past Sunday.........
Lighting up the Chiefs doesn't seem like it holds the same value as it did a few weeks ago.......

But can he get separation during his routes? I think Omari Evans is incredibly fast as well but he could rarely get separation.

Did you care about separation when arob caught the hail Mary vs Michigan in 2013? Godwin vs OSU 2016 before the half? Dotson one handed grab vs OSU? All covered like a glove.

Speed/separation keeps the defense honest but it also helps if you can catch balls in traffic.

Remember Wallace near TD catch vs OSU that turned into an Interception?

Exactly why they should put more emphasis on catching the ball in traffic. Separation is also.less.of a factor on a short field.

Other guys from non Power 4; Tinsley was decent, Cephus a bust. The concern I have with Ross is the level of competition he has played against. Yeah I know he had a good game versus Iowa. Can he make contested catches and/or get separation versus Oregon or Ohio State or Georgia or Alabama or Notre Dame or Texas?

If he has 4.3 speed he can. Just based on those Iowa highlights he is going to be someone secondaries have to plan for. PSU needs to target him a lot early in the season to establish him.

He's 5-11 so, again, if he runs a 4.3, that's good size for someone that fast. You combine him with the USC transfer Kyron Hudson, who at 6-1 also has decent size for his speed, and PSU at least could have the start of something at wideout.

The biggest limiting factor for the PSU passing game is Allar. Coach K had better spend most of the off season trying to design a passing offense around what Allar can do well instead of what he can't.

I think Allar is an exceptional QB....perhaps the best we've had in several decades. But his biggest problem has been the deep ball. while his short and intermediate throws are damn good, even on the run, his deep balls always seem short and cause our WR to have to battle for the ball. You can't throw to a speedster short because it takes away his core competency. This is where Allar really needs to improve IMHO.

Sadly, and I do mean sadly the walkon is about to become an extinct species. :(
