Penn State, remember 1999.

Never forget. I was at that game and the defense gave up after that game for the last 3 games. Did win the bowl game.

Dan f’ing Nystrom.

Saw many a few people in tears on the way out of the stadium that day.

That michigan game was quite possibly the worst officiated PSU game I've ever seen (though there are several contenders). It was 27-17 about halfway through the 4th when the refs carried brady & michigan the rest of the way. Cheated virtually the entire length of the field to make it 27-24: a series of phantom penalties - ignored blatant holdings - and awarded brady a TD he never scored. I also remember Courtney getting absolutely mugged on the game winning TD. Just sickening.

The phantom holding call against Brandon Short that gave UM an unearned first down is what I will NEVER forget about that game.

This whole remembering 1999 things sucks. It was crappy and it's really hard to remember anything from then for some reason.

Brady threw the ball on the pass interference call in the end zone 10 feet over the receiver’s head and it landed several yards out of the endzone. It happened right in front of me. The entire student section was making the uncatchable sign to no avail. The fix was in already.

i’m not sure if that was the worst one; Tony Johnson’s out of bounds call in 2002 and Jason Avant being in bounds in 2005 were equally horrendous.

But bad calls all even out

Courtney being held on that play was my screen saver for many years when I had a mouthy UM co-worker. Didn't do much to shut him up, but any little bit helped.

You mean this and where the Ref had an unobstructed view of the entire "crime" unfold the whole way? Refs leg highlighted in yellow

I had this EXACT conversation just yesterday with my son. What killed me (and a big difference with this team) about that 99 team was many nationally had picked them to win MNC and entered the season ranked 2/3.

It was one of the most disappointing seasons in my lifetime (or at least I can remember) . That defense was stacked.

Unfortunately, that team really never improved as the season progressed, and a loss like the Minnesota one had been coming for a few weeks leading up to that game. That team also did not have an elite qb.

There's no doubt in my mind that that team would've beaten Michigan had they beaten Minnesota. However, and I know that the team was devastated from the previous two games and played without Arrington, I believe that MSU would've beaten us in the last game anyway; that was just a bad matchup because of their power running game.

Here's a little history of how bad that game was wrapped up in the final 2 minutes. Watch Arrington literally smack the ref to get out of the way. He did everything possible to block that kick.

1999 Michigan: we ran the ball 20 times for 7 yards. Kevin Thompson was 4 for -7 ... so I suppose there were a few sacks ... but even if you subtract that it's 16 rushes for 14 yards.

That's simply not a good recipe for winning a football game. Ultimately why we lost that one.

That was my first year on the Plot-It board. It got ugly, a lot of posters said the team quit in the first half against MSU. Great start, horrible finish.

Yeah, that 1999 MSU game, MSU had 28 points after 21 minutes. It was ....... not good.

We did come back to tie that at 28-28 but we played like we didn't want to be there on a cold November day for the first 20 minutes.

When it comes to scUM and the incredible bias that the Big Ten referines have blatantly engaged in since we entered the conference, it is Impossible to single out the 1999 game as a travesty, or some aberration. The patten of blatant favoritism in close games vs scUM far exceeds anything I’ve seen in all of sports. Every single year, it’s the same BS to enable a potential scUM victory, assuming the game is close and the refs are able to swing it where possible. Bottom line is you have to kick their a_ _ es and put the game out of reach early, or run the risk of the refs impacting the outcome in favor of scUM as the game progresses to the end.

Boy was it fun kicking their rears during the RichRod and Brady Hoke days. And now that we have fully recovered from the sanctions and our recruiting is approaching elite status under CJF, we may be able to kick their behinds more often.

The 1999 team was very limited offensively. Mediocre play at QB. RB by committee and not great on the outside.

If that team would have won it would have had to been like the 1986 team. That isn't an easy way to win.

Should have started Rashard Casey at QB and put an amazing, athletic talent at the helm of that team. Joe played it by the book and went with K Thompson, as a senior. Casey was able to essentially play only one year in 2000, with a depleted defense and very little talent around him.

It was on this day exactly 20 years ago, Nov 6 1999, where i endured the toughest loss as a Penn State fan...

Minnesota was a cardiac arrest, dead before you hit the floor. Iowa was a slooooowwww, torturous, painful death watch. I was there for both of them, choose your method of death as far as I'm concerned.

That A&M bowl game was a downer. Way too much talent squandered away that season. At least they finished off the Aggies.

I actually think Thompson was underrated. People were mad that Paterno kept playing him rather than Casey, thinking Casey was a complete stud. But the next season exposed Casey.

Thompson did end up playing a couple years in the NFL. Casey never made it.

Thompson wasn't very good. He had a 19 TD/17 Int ration as a senior and that was his best year. He was able to bounce around the league.

Interesting viewpoint, but I respectfully disagree. Kevin Thompson was serviceable at best and very immobile. His biggest play was his strike to Chaffee Fields to win the Miami game early in the season. Otherwise there was little to remember about his performance in 2000, especially with the stud defense with Arrington, Brown, Short, etc. to bolster the team. Rashard Casey’s stats were very similar to Thompson’s senior year and Casey actually had slightly more passing yards and TD passes his senior season, with one less interception. He also gave the added dimension of running for 300 yards, even with joe attempting to keep him locked into the pocket , which was a mistake IMO and limited his play making abilities. The team was doomed with the loss of all the key defensive studs from the underperforming ‘99 team.

It’s all history now, but certainly worth debating.

Casey was born about 5-10 years too early. He would have done much better playing at any point from 2005 on with his skill set. I remember reading a post about Paterno taking chalk or paint and outlining the pocket in practice and yelling at Casey not to leave it.
