Penn State, remember 1999.

Casey was born about 5-10 years too early. He would have done much better playing at any point from 2005 on with his skill set. I remember reading a post about Paterno taking chalk or paint and outlining the pocket in practice and yelling at Casey not to leave it.
I thought I remembered something about him wanting to learn to play in the pocket. Maybe I'm thinking of someone else. Casey played great in the Alamo Bowl the year before his senior season. Then he had his senior season practically ruined before it started by Hoboken PD Chief Carmen LaBruno. I'm sure that didn't help him. We were down, anyway, talent-wise, but that certainly didn't help.

History is never irrelevant. That's like saying the holocast is irrelevan because most of you weren't born.

Thanks for the false equivalency. I have a feeling nobody in the Penn State locker room will be thinking, "Oh my god!! Did you hear about 1999?!?!?"

Thing about that game -- one of so many "shoulda/woulda/couldas"...

3rd and 10 at the Minnesota 33 yard line with 2:01 left to play. Instead of a running play, or even a 5-10 yard safe pass to get into more manageable FG range, Gantner calls a long pass play that was overthrown by Thompson. Granted, Fields was open and would have scored if not for the overthrow. Still, the incompletion of that low percentage pass 1) stopped the clock and 2) made it a little easier for Joe not to try a FG.

Instead of attempting a 50 yard FG, Joe elects to punt, which drops into the EZ. Essentially a 13 yard punt. So to summarize that last PSU possession...

Bad play call IMO by Gantner at the end there..

Poor execution by #16 Thompson..

Hindsight being 20/20, mistake by JoePa by not at least attempting that 50 yard FG, which if made with PSU then up 26-21, would have forced Minnesota to go for the TD.

Classic game of "playing not to lose", instead leaving it up to the defense to win it. Which yes, if not for a fluke catch after the ball bounced off another player's body -- would have been the winning strategy. But still, that last series of events toward the end of the game gnawed at me for quite some time.

Honestly -- I'm glad those days are in the rear view mirror.
