Penn State v Miami 1999

I was at the game in the Orange Bowl in 1999. PSU ran out of gas. Officials always seemed to throw a flag when PSU had a big play... but Fields 80 yd recpt was a thing of beauty. Loved walking out of the OB after the game.

Also noticed on that game that Edward Drummond could actually catch the ball. He had some nice plays in that game as well as Iowa that year. By 2001 he had "manos de piedra"

That PSU team lost a lot of close games at the end. Reminds me of a WVU team. The 97 and 98 teams. So someone fill me in on what happened?

At the time we lived in Rowayton, CT and I had a 2 year old boy and a baby girl who was born the day the "Lavar Arrington Fires Up #1 Penn State" Sports Illustrated (Jinx) cover was mailed.

During the first half of the U game I watched with my 2 year old son. I was spitting F- Bombs all over the place. My son started repeating. My bride was not happy. Luckily he was playing with a toy truck on the floor by the TV cabinet....see "Truck!" is what he was saying : )

For the 2nd half I had my infant girl in my arms. Frustrating game until the bomb to Fields. I starting screaming "go,go, go!" Woke up the baby who cried. My wife came running g downstairs and our next door neighbor-who was like a grandparent to our kids came running across the driveway and into our kitchen thinking there was a problem.

Neither were happy with me, but I was thrilled! As we headed into the slide/ dark years PSU games we're not always broadcast on the NYC stations- so I spent a lot of time at Bobby Valentine's bar in Norwalk on Saturdays to watch us. My wife would always send me with a child to keep me in line. Got some odd looks with a baby in at a pub.

That year was incredibly disappointing (from a football perspective).

Minnesota broke their spirit and the wheels fell off.
As I recall it, the PSU offense was pretty pedestrian. The defense carried that team. It finally fell apart on the Minny hail mary.
I still blame Dan Kendra. His commitment effectively ended QB recruiting before his late switch to FSU left PSU wanting at QB.
