Football Penn State vs Washington Week (Discussions, Articles, more, etc)

Franklin opening statement quick notes.

- No one is more dissapointed than us.

- Have to clean up the penalties.

- Third down was a major issue in the game for Penn State.

- Has three drives they would like back defensively, and of course would like the two goal line drives back on offense.

- Zion Tracy he thought looked good on Saturday both on defense and as a punt returner.

- Zakee Wheatley continues to progress, trend in right direction.

- Ryan Barker continues to be strong.

- Strong game for Gabe Nwosu as well.

- Need to move on to Washington, thought staff and players did a good job of making corrections yesterday and moving off onto Washington. Have to make sure one loss doens't turn into two.

On the goal line stand:

- Didn't get any movement in the trenches. Have two really good running backs and you need to get them those touches but somewhere in there you also have to get Tyler Warren involved somehow.

On his 'playing our best when our best is needed' in retrospect to this past Saturday..

- We did not do that in that game. The competition factors into that. At the end of the day we lost to a top five team and we had opportunities to win the game. We have to find a way to get it done and that starts with me.

On the wide receivers

- I think we have improved but there's still more work to do and that last game is an example of that. We've got to be able to threaten people, stretch people, make plays, create seperation, make tough catches. That needs to happen, that needs to be an emphsis the rest of the season.

On Penn State's penalty discipline

- Didn't turn in the 'taunting' call on Elliot Washington. Didn't turn it into the Big Ten but by rule it was a penalty, however, you watch any game and that happens all the time and doesn't get called.

- Concerned that discipline continues to be an issue despite trying to teach.

- On final defense drive.

- Definetely concerning. They needed to score on the offensive drive but the defense had the opportunity to get a safety and get the offense the ball back. "You've got to be able to stop the run when everyone in the stadium knows they're going to run the ball." Overall pleased with the defense but there are three drives in that game where he doesn't believe they played up to the standard they have set.

On bouncing back from the loss but also learning from it so one loss doesn't turn into two

- Believes as a whole they have the right process on a week-to-week basis and that's why they've been as successful as they have the last few years. But you have to look at yourselves; the coaches, the players, the offense, the defense. It's about being introspective. For him, its not just about this week, its about everything that goes into building a championship level program.

- On the fan interaction...

"I'm good with that. Someone's screaming at me and my daughter within a couple of feet while we're walking off the field and I'm good with that. I asked the young man what his name was. It's like posting something with your picture and your name and own what you post. I just asked the gentleman what his name was, started stuttering and backed up and didn't say his name. Critiques and opinions come, that's part of the territory I get it. I asked the young man what his name was."

I try to stay as balanced as I can when looking at this team but the WRs have not improved at all since last year and have not improved at all since the beginning of this year. They are a huge problem for a team looking to go somewhere in the playoffs. Any team with athletic DBs will just use the OSU method of physical, man coverage all game long. We either need to be good enough to get open or the coaches need to scheme them open. Neither of those is happening.

There might be 5 or 6 teams who have this capability. Last year, everyone did this after the Illinois game. Besides OSU, who else has done it?

We are improved year over year, but on Saturday that wasn't enough to beat OSU. In the 12 team playoff era, we have to recover and improve.

Yeah, I'm not worried about the next 4 games. If we lose one of those then we don't deserve the playoffs anyway. I just meant that most of the playoff teams will do exactly what OSU did and will be able to use more guys to bring pressure or use a spy if it's Pribula. Much easier to defend if you just need to worry about the RBs and one of the TEs. Michigan has done that to us for the past few years. The Marylands of our schedule don't have that luxury so I'm not really worried about them.

No excuses. He's getting paid $8 million per year and dealing with criticism is part of the deal. He's supposed to set an example for his team, the fans, and the university. He failed.

Allar threw a long pass down the left sideline to Wallace in the first half. The pass was high but it was catchable. The pass to Wallace in the end zone was also catchable but turned into an INT. Both would have been tough catches but somebody has to make those plays in order to beat teams like OSU.

The only tough catches in traffic I recall this year were by Warren (and 1 by Luke Reynolds). It's not just that our WRs can't get separation, they don't win the 50/50 balls.

It was Wallace who made the contested 24 yd one-handed catch on the side-line down by the goal line right before the INT in the end zone.
