I have always thought 184 was the best weight for us since 2011, but after I threw it on a spreadsheet I'm not so sure.
174 looks like king with the lowest place 5th in all those years.
165 being third maybe.

149 - 2,1,x,5,x,1,1,1

157 - 2,3,x,x,x,2,1,1

165 - x,1,2,1,x,x,1,1

174 - 3,1,2,5,1,2,1,2

184 - 1,2,1,1,x,x,1,1

197 - x,x,1,7,3,2,x,7

There's probably another way to do this list by points scored, but that would take longer.

197 - x,x,1,7,3,2,x,7

Pretty sure it would be pretty close for 174/184 no matter how you did it but with 3 1st, 3 2nd, one 3d and one 5th, 174 would most likely get the nod due to the two missed years at 184. 149 gets the edge over 165 because of the added 5th place finish. Then 157 and 197.

All in all, a very impressive set of results.

Crystal ball after this year

149 - 2,1,x,5,x,1,1,1 4-5

157 - 2,3,x,x,x,2,1,1 1

165 - x,1,2,1,x,x,1,1 1

174 - 3,1,2,5,1,2,1,2 2

184 - 1,2,1,1,x,x,1,1 2-3

197 - x,x,1,7,3,2,x,7 1

How much do results change if one uses a broader lens: 10 years or even 15 or 20? My guess is that 133 and 285 have been relatively weaker over the last 10 years or more. A mitigating (or at least relevant) factor in the analysis is when you find one elite wrestler (e.g., Retherford at 149 or Nolf at 157 or Taylor at 165) performing really well in consecutive years.

It would also be interesting to see how PSU results compare with other programs: Iowa, tOSU, Oklahoma State, Minnesota, etc. Minnesota, for example, is traditionally strong at 285 while Iowa has ruled 125.

By comparison

125 - x,2,2,3,8,1,x,x
133 - 3,x,x,x,5,6,x,x
141 - x,x,x,5,x,x,x,5
285 - 5,x,x,x,6,x,5,7

Pretty sure we've always qualified a wrestler at 141, not always the case at the other 3 weights.

Dear Lord, tonight I would like to be thankful for posters on wrestling boards who have too much spare time. They provide such fascinating information. Seriously though, it was a good read. Thanks for doing it.

Is there a webpage with the same placement information but also with the names of the placers? I can't quite remember all the names that go with the placements. If the information is not on one page, please point me to the multiple pages, and I'd be happy to type it into one page like liex26's.

I believe PSWC site would have all the info. Not on 1 page [that I'm aware of?], but surfing around several pages will find it all.

174 is 3,1,2,5,1,2,1,2:
Ruth, Ruth, MB, MB, MB, Bo, Hall, Hall
This one I'm pretty sure of because of a recent convo w/friend about this kind of subject. Only weight w/4 different AA's in Cael era.
**Side note FWIW: Ortega was 2010 [dnq], but 2009 was QW -6th [year before CS obviously]. So PSU has 5 diff AA in last 10yrs @174.

I used NCAA site, forgot to even try PSWC site. Like you said, it's not available on a single page that I'm aware of.

I'll try to do some more math here, even though it's a weak area for me.
% win(make finals){top3}
149: 50(62.5){62.5}

157: 25(50){62.5}

165: 50(62.5){62.5}

174: 37.5(75){87.5}

184: 62.5(75){75}

197: 12.5(25){37.5}

Combined: 39.5(58.3){64.5}

At these weights when they go to the finals they win 68% of the time.

I'll take my best shot.

285 - Wade?,x,x,x,Lawson,x,Nevills,Nevills

I don't remember Wade being an AA but I thought he was our HWT in 2011.

Edit - I don't think we had a 285 AA in 2011

You are correct.
I remember this different than some others as this has been discussed before, and I haven't been able to find B1G brackets to research it but Cam Wade was our 285.
I went to B1Gs that year at NW. I remember it was very close with Iowa in the lead. We needed Wade to win for a tie or bonus for a win. Wade turn his guy and got back points for a major to win the team tournament.
He started well at NCAAs but finished outside AA.

You're right, I was thinking of Wade's 5th place finish at Bigs, Through some sort of mental gymnastics I transposed it to NCAAs.

Or copy/paste into Excel, then you can manipulate however you want. Sort by weight, then year will give you what you want, if I understand correctly.
