Reportedly, PETA wants to replace Phil with a robot.
The inmates sure run this asylum.

Punxsutawney Phil is funny.

See, this is some crazy Pennsylvania trivia for you folks. This is a bit esoteric and hard to describe if you haven't been around PA Dutchmen but I'll try my best.

Last year I visited the Kutztown Folk Festival where there was a stand for a group called the "Grundsau Lodge" or something. Grundsau is PA Dutch for groundhog. The lodge is a fraternal club for PA Dutchmen - still around today, it used to be a big deal in the eastern part of the state, like around Reading and the Lehigh Valley. They speak PA German at the meetings.

Those guys have used the groundhog as their "folk symbol" since at least the 1800s. They are the "true followers" of "the groundhog." And they absolutely hate Punxsutawney Phil! They believe the "coal miners" out in Jefferson County stole a PA Dutch tradition and turned it into a cheap and crass thing for tourism.

In fact, the one old Dutchman showed that for their club's initiation ceremony in Lehigh County (district 11!), they used to burn Punxsutawney Phil in effigy! :D

To be clear, the funniest thing was that it was impossible to discern how serious they were about all this!

This is a great PA rivalry hardly anyone knows about. So now you know. :)
