Whether you believe the TRUMP tariffs will do any of the things he says they will or not, he's making a HUGE mistake sending Peter Navarro out to be the main spokesman for his plans. Navarro reminds me of a side show barker with his non-stop circular arguments that evade the legitimate questions put to him by knowledgeable business reporters. When someone wants to do all the talking about unproven theories and and avoids answering specific questions that people are truly interested in, that raises a red flag for me.
For example, when asked to reconcile the two very different goals TRUMP has put out for imposing the tariffs, you get a convoluted "history" of all the evils the current arrangements have caused. Why? Why not tell us how this is expected to play out and which of the goals (free trade or HUGE tariff revenues) is the true goal here. Is TRUMP fielding these calls from 50 nations "BEGGING" to lower or eliminate their tariffs and , if so, to what end? Simple question that was asked, but remains unanswered. This is a core issue in helping us understand what TRUMP is trying to do. Navarro didn't come within a country mile of answering it.
How many times in one interview (with what could be called friendly hosts) does he say, "why are you interrupting me when I was about to answer your question... do you want an answer or not?" and then go off on another tangent not answering the original question. How, about, "let me make this one point about that...." and then makes five of six unresponsive assertions.... none of which are convincing?
Navarro simply deflects the tough questions, redirects the dialogue to areas covered a hundred times and is totally obnoxious in doing all of that. How is that not going to win over the support he needs? LOL
Maybe this is TRUMP playing 3 dimensional chess and everyone else is playing checkers again, but I am a big believer in Occam's razor.... it looks like a snow job to me. Navarro's act is really tough to watch, particularly for someone, like me, who wants to hear logical explanations that support these tariffs. Fast talk and bullying responses is NOT how the public will grow more confident and trusting in tariffs. Sorry.
