Wondering why they had the field go out on the front and back nine for the final round. Usually they have the entire field go off #1 on the last 2 roundds after the cut has been determined....I am sure TV is the reason. BTW....That Balonis chick is smoking hot!

Here, let me pick that up...

My son is out there at Torrey Pines today, watching them play. The views are pretty spectacular, and the weather seems to be cooperating. The forecast for much of the rest of the country, not so much. More Polar Vortex stuff. Ugh.

Played there on the 14th which was the last day before the course was closed for set up. Rained like crazy and at times stung my face it was blowing so hard. Beautiful setting though and we stayed in the lodge which was definitely a good choice. It was my first trip to San Diego and it is one impressive place. The money being invested in the region but especially at UC San Diego is incredible. I’ve never seen so many tower cranes, new construction and highway overpasses being built in such close proximity. Whether true or not I was told UCSD is growing from 40,000 to 60,000 students.

They went out early because last year they suspended play due to darkness and played one playoff hole on Monday.

UCSD is expanding with primarily international students who are driving tuition way up. Most of the UC system is that way. Nationals are enrolling at Cal State. Had an office across the street from the campus at Torrey Pines from 2007-2018 and did a lot of UCSD business. You wouldn’t know it was in SD by walking around campus.

Weird seeing them putt with the flag in. Great rule change imho

International students don't drive tuition up... they subsidize the in state students. What is an issue for state schools is what is their mission? To educate Californians or to educate Chinese nationals?

It IS weird, Obli. Don't know if I could do it. I've putted with the flag out for too many years. Maybe if I had a LONG lag putt I could bring myself to do it.

Very impressed with Justin Rose. Should be a legit threat in all of the 2019 Majors. The Aussie, Adam Scott is also playing lights out.

Amanda Balonis is spectacular and a refreshing relief from the Fox-inspired call girl look of Holly Sonders. Sonders is awful.

It’s VERY strange, that’s for sure.

Putting on a typical practice green with knee-high flags always feels ok.....but putting with a 6-7’ pin in on a regular green just feels unnatural.

Instead of “do you want it tended or do you want it out”, it’s gonna be “do you want it left in, do you want it tended or do you want it out”. Usually once the flag is taken out, it’s out. Now, depending on who you are playing with, the flag could become a yo-yo, in-and-out, then again in-and-out.

Will be interesting to see what the pros do with some of the greens / pin placements come April at Augusta!

The announcers we suggesting leaving it in is a no brainer. It's just a matter of getting used to it. That it is benificial to the golfer. In time there will be no question about the flag

How about Bryson D? He kicked ass and won by seven in Asia.
I agree with you. I wish more top US players would venture overseas to play. I have a theory that the reason the Europeans do so well in the Ryder Cup is because they play all over the world in all types of conditions whereas American golf is bomb it, find it, wedge it. Everything is virtually the same here no matter the course, so the players are not as well-rounded.

Because not enough daylight this time of year?

Plus - for TV's sake, they want the Final group on the 18th hole around 3 PM local time (6 PM Eastern).

So, the amount of available daylight is limited further (2 hours of daylight that they wouldn't use outside of a playoff).

I was at Pebble Beach for the February tournament a few years back: that's a Pro-Am so the dynamic is a bit different. Each group takes longer. But they did start Sunday off both tees.

Daylight is the reason. Up until the Tour gets to the East Coast and after Daylight Savings Time starts, any full-field event is going to have split tees and 3somes on the weekend to ensure that the round ends before dark. Last year's Farmers had 4 playoff holes before darkness moved it to Monday. They could play until 5:30 and the it was scheduled to end at 4:30, just like it was today. You'll see it in Phoenix next week and in LA in a couple of weeks.

When the wind bends it in, and it keeps a ball out, that should put an end to this nonsense.
