Phenomenal documentary on Kenny Monday! (Link)

Understanding how good Kenny Monday was, allows for a true appreciation of Nate Carr and Jim Zelesky.

Available for free courtesy of Rudis Wrestling. I don’t know where they got all of the vintage footage but this might be the best wrestling documentary I have ever seen. Kenny was one of my heroes growing up.

Thanks so much for posting that. It was excellent. Kenny was phenomenal. On another note, Dave Schultz's murder was and is so sad. When I was at Southern Oregon University in the mid 1980's both Dave (R.I.P.) and Mark Schultz would sometimes drop by for practice. Dave always seemed like such a genuinely nice guy. I was too shy to introduce myself to him, but he introduced himself to me later when he quickly pinned me at an open tournament : ) I was so nervous in that match I could barely move. I quickly fell on my sword by taking a lame shot straight into Dave's patented front headlock to a pin!

Especially Nate, who won his last 2 NCAA Championships (1983 & 1984) against Monday in the finals... Monday would win his only NCAA Championship @50 the next year (1985) after Nate had graduated.

Nate and Kenny had the direct competition, but Nate bumped up once to wrestle Zelesky and got pummeled and Kenny obviously thought he had a better shot at 150 against 3 timer Nate than bumping up to 158 to try his luck against 3 timer Zelesky.
Kenny had a couple wins against Nate, at least one Big8 title. Maybe 2.

Talking about Kenny winning one is about as absurd as discussing one time champion Alan Fried. Both were so much better than most of their contemporaries, but each stuck behind all-time greats.

Not sure if that is a fair comparison as only a year or two earlier, Nate had beat Zalesky at the same weight both were wrestling in a National Tournament (forget which one) following their SR years in high school. In the match you're talking about, Carr was giving up a significant amount of "good weight" as Carr was wrestling 150 lbs and wrestled up a weight @158 for that specific dual.

I think your years are off by one. I saw Monday win the title at the Meadowlands (Princeton Hosted) in 1984. I think Carr won titles 1982 & 1983.
Footnote to 1984 Championships.
Penn State had 2 champs. DeStafanis &Lynch
Nebraska had a wrestler in finals the last 3 weights. The Scherr brothers at 177 , 190 and Gary Albright lost to Tab Thacker at Unlimited.

Yes, you're right - Nate won the 150 lb Championship in 1981, 1982 and 1983 (the latter 2 against Monday in the finals). Monday won his only Championship in 1984 @150 after Nate had graduated from ISU.

great docu, thx for sharing! what an amazing career Kenny Monday had. only downside to watching this was being reminded of Dave Schultz's death and the devastation that the psycho du pont inflicted on the wrestling community. it's still bewildering.

PS-connections
PSU All American Bernie Fritz had a big win over Freshman-Phenom Kenny Monday at the 1981 NCAAs.

Greg Elinsky had some good 88 Olympic Trial final battles with Monday.

Monday is a true legend and great champion

I dunno about bewildering, dude was rich af and threw money at a niche sport, of course he got whatever he wanted.

Fun watch, though.

One weird dude if you think about it. Someone with no skills wanting to surround him with people who had skills watching him try and wrestle is just strange

Insanely wealthy kid gets anything he wants and grows up to be a weirdo. No surprise there. Maybe his family shoulda thrown some of that money at mental health studies, I guess.
