PIAA announces fall sports to played as scheduled

I’m shocked they didn’t cancel after the Patriot league etc said they were suspending play.

Good for the PIAA.

These kids have been sitting around for too long because of something that is not a major threat to them.

Fall sports would be a great morale boost for the kids of this state.
I live in Maryland, high schools kids are already organizing unofficial practices themselves. Kids are getting together. For them to go to school and play sports isn't really going to change anything. Studies out of Iceland, Ireland and the Netherlands show that under 20 is extremely low risk to the virus and extremely rare in passing it to an adult.

Let the kids play.

I guess you are right. Currently, our family is struggling with a close relative with Covid-19 and the effects of my other grandchildren with close contact. My wife and I (the grandparents) may be in quarantine by the end of the week.
Let the games begin....

Dr. Alonso is warning the public about what the coronavirus may be doing to some youngsters.

“In the five to 14-year-olds, when those children are examined, there are changes in the lungs that have occurred," she said. "We have no idea what the long-term effect of this will be."

COVID-19 may also affect the lungs of toddlers, according to Alonso. She says doctors are seeing changes in the lungs in chest X-rays, specifically in children ages zero to four.

“It might affect them in terms of chronic asthma or any other respiratory problems, so we gotta keep a close eye on that," she sad.

Another local doctor shares her concern.

“We do not know what the long-term effects on children’s lungs are. Currently, we’re seeing that children are having milder symptoms as compared to the adults. But we know that kids who have a predisposition to asthma usually have a little more extreme symptoms," said Dr. Angelica Johnson, a pediatric emergency physician with the T. Leroy Jefferson Medical Society in West Palm Beach.

Dr. Johnson says the effects of COVID-19 on children’s lungs needs to be carefully monitored.

For now sports are on. Just putting off the inevitable. Already working on a plan to push back football season till October and play 7 regular season games and then post season.

Ok. My bad. Kids should hide under their beds forever.

Thanks for setting me straight snowflake.
If you don’t understand the difference between “kids hiding under their bed” and acting like nothing is wrong and things should go back to normal for the sake of morale, you’re even more stupid than it appeared earlier. Clowns like you are why PA just went back to 25%.

Per the latest PA state report (released 7/10)-

-Total PA Covid deaths- 6,680
-Deaths under age 25- 6

Total PA deaths under age 25 for 2018 (latest year I could find)- 2,334

Just for some comparison-
1. Accidents (non car)- 418
2. Car accidents- 197
3. Flu & pneumonia- 24
4. Suicide- 257
5. Assault/ Homicide- 239
6. Heart Disease- 60
7. Cancer- 91

My 80 year old uncle has a tiny little arm because he had polio when he was a kid. Do you know what kind of affects the "unaffected" under 25 will have when they get older? Also, will Covid be considered a pre existing condition when trying to get affordable health or life insurance in the future for the younger generation?

They will regret saying this when they have to cancel all fall sports. People will crucify them for “flip flopping.”

Schools and universities aren’t going to last long being open if they even open. If there is no vaccine we are going to see huge spikes in cases when school and universities open back up. This will cause them to close again.

If the trend we have seen continues there won’t be fall sports. Or kids in schools. We are already moving backwards with tighter restrictions being put in place because as soon as restrictions were lifted we started seeing increases again a few weeks later.

I simply gave the official numbers for perspective in this (never ending) debate. They are straight from the Pennsylvania Department of Health. It’s nothing to get angry or emotional over.

Why so polar? There is a whole lotta real estate between throwing caution to the wind and hiding eternally under beds. We’re seeing what happens when we push back to normal too fast - back to square one. And now that herd immunity appears to be out of the equation, what next? Our society has shown a tremendous lack of discipline of late in dealing with this pandemic, and it only takes a handful of selfish knuckleheads to ruin everything for the rest of us.

No problem. I get it. It’s a new disease with some unknowns.

I occasionally post the updated numbers in these threads just to try to keep things in perspective. You know how some threads on this board can go off the rails at times. :D

What's a few people dying do for morale? Keep sending people to work unprotected. Need to produce those widgets so the boss can make his millions.

OL

Little people are expendable. If some die, just get more.

Unless the structure of authority in Pa. is totally different than NY......The PIAA does not have the final word on when interscholastic sports will begin. The primary gate keeper is the governor, then the medical authorities (state board of health) and the State Education Department as well. All the PIAA is saying is "we" are staying the course, unless someone in authority steps in.
One can disagree with simple arguments like,"let them play," LOL. But high schools do not have the resources of the PSAC or the Ivy League.....and they have cancelled. Think about this for a minute. Let it sink in. Everyone wants to return to normal. A big part of this is high school and college football for all of us here. Getting kids back to school safely will be the first and most important step on the road to "normal." A few weeks of in person instruction without spiking numbers will be the best argument for resuming athletics.

Other countries that opened their schools or never closed them didn’t have huge spikes. And Germany did a very large study on it and found it doesn’t spread in schools to children or teachers.

The PIAA knows there isn't going to be a season. Their "announcement" just gives them cover to say "hey, don't look at us".

Herd immunity is definitely on the table, that is why NYC is not having a spike right now. Some reality:

1. Once things start to open back up, the virus will spread until herd immunity is reached. That is what viruses do.
2. It is estimated that up to 50% of the population has some kind of immunity to the virus either naturally or cross immunity possibly from a different corona virus. Which means that we do not need the originally 60 to 70% of the population to be infected to stop the spread, far below 50% now.
3. You cannot take locked down or even severely restricted forever, the economy will get crushed which will cause huge drops in tax revenue which means huge cuts to government services.
4. It is believed that immunity to the virus decreases over time, which means that the virus is not going to go away, we need to learn how to live with it.
5. Lives are being destroyed over the lockdowns, particularly kids. Their education is suffering and so are their psyche's.

For example, my daughter's best friend has a chance to be a low level D1 track athlete. Better to say she had a chance. She is going into her senior year, with no spring track season this past year, no summer track season, her opportunity is most likely gone. How many kids are in this situation?

PJ Fleck says life is about moments and memories. I will add it is also about opportunity because it allows for the chance at moments and memories.

If every flu or pneumonia death were reported, maybe even with a photo- people would be scared sh-itless of the flu too.

COVID-19: There have been approximately 584,782 deaths reported worldwide. In the U.S, 137,419 people have died of COVID-19, as of July 16, 2020.*

Flu: The World Health Organization estimates that 290,000 to 650,000 people die of flu-related causes every year worldwide.

In the U.S., from Oct. 1, 2019 – Apr. 4, 2020, the CDC estimates that 24,000 to 62,000 people died from the flu. (The CDC does not know the exact number because the flu is not a reportable disease in most parts of the U.S

If the antibodies wear off in as little as a couple of months, short of a vaccine and/or a legitimate treatment (hearing good things about stem cells btw), we’ll never reach herd immunity. More concerning is that some experts are theorizing that a second infection may be worse than the initial. Yes, we need to open back up, but we need to be FAR more responsible about it than we’ve done so far.

IMHO, some of you are reading too much into this. The PIAA has strict schedules on when preseason practices can start, and also on referee education. With their announcement yesterday (see below), the PIAA is simply indicating that as of now, the schedule for training, the schedule for Rules Interpretation meetings (which every ref, and a representative from every school must attend), and the schedule for referee training for the fall season will go forward as planned.

Actual competition (excluding preseason scrimmages) is not slated to start until Sep. 4. Between now and that date, a lot may change, and adjustments may be made. I've talked with several folks that are are involved in daily planning on athletics who have serious doubts as to whether the fall high school sports will be played in PA; only time will tell.
