PIAA leaving Hershey! Headed to Cumberland Valley!

Very, very poor decision imo by PIAA. Hershey may have been "too big" for most games but Mechanisburg just doesn't scream "State Championships" for me. Their press box is nice but way too small to hold the number of people needed for state championship games.

Hershey may just be getting to expansive. The big 33 game moved to Central Dauphin High school. Hershey uses and pays regular employees for everything. At these schools volunteers can help.

There's a surprise... the PIAA making a poor decision.

I'm wondering when they'll give the state wrestling finals back to PCN instead of the dopes at FLO. Or if they'll continue to auction off the broadcast rights of all the sports to the highest bidders.

I think this was key to the decision. Beaver Stadium was deemed too expensive to rent and operate for the games. The PIAA will get the most profit by playing at Cumberland and that’s what they choose.

This has more to do with the national appeal of Pennsylvania high school wrestling. By all accounts the best wrestling top to bottom in the country. With that being said, PCN did a fantastic job and was a great broadcast every year.

What sets the rental prices of these venues? It can't be competition because it's not like they are being used for other things that week. If it's cost of operation then it's all perfectly understandable. Of course my (Class A) high school can probably let them use their field for even less.

I student taught at Cumberland Valley many years ago. I really enjoyed it. That said, why would they pick a grass field to hold these several games in December? It won't hold up. Maybe they have plans to replace the surface by using the money gained from winning this contract.

If CV is still grass, that adds to an already poor decision by the PIAA. Look at the condition of Heinz Field after the WPIAL games. And that's on professional field turf. No way the average HS field holds up.

Most state athletic associations are now going through RFP's (bidding process). We have recently done the same here with the NYSPHSAA. Some locations are offered cost free (because merchants in the community can use the business) because some cities and counties are even subsidizing the cost.
Keeping dues low for member schools is a major concern. I know that may not be the answer everyone wants to hear, but that's the process.
I'm sure PSU could not offer up Beaver Stadium cost free.

Could the football program subsidize it as a recruiting expense?

Schools and communities would do a lot to get these deals. It’s a lot of prestige as well a local economic boost. And much of the cost can be offset by volunteers.

We have the site of our spring track and field offered for free. Costs are subsidized by the city and county as well as a donation from our section(like districts in Pa.). We give that money because having the event in our section saves 44 schools from paying for transportation and meals should it be held in another part of New York.
Hotels, motels and restaurants do very well over a three day period,

Should get the local tourist promotion agency involved. They often have access to state funds to fund and promote local activities.

CV is a great choice—they are getting an all weather field-have load of free parking-easy access to major
highways-central location-so many motels, restaurants, bars, breweries.People say not enough motel space-Carlisle alone holds multiple times more people in motels during car shows than will ever go to the games-allowed to use all facilities(ie-pools,extra workout fields,etc)—8000 capacity—CV is perfect. Beaver Stadium is just too big for a game that doesn’t draw more than 5 or 6,000 fans. They had the initial championship games there-and,you could hardly see the people. The same thing happened when they moved the track championships from PSU to Shippensburg.Went from a cold atmosphere because of venue size to a packed venue that is exciting.

Only questions are if they are getting turf and parking might be tight for some 4A to 6A games.

Their stadium holds 8,045 apparently. Last years PIAA championship games top attendance was 4,306 people so venue size is fine and will hopefully be a better atmosphere.

It’s still centrally located with easy access to highways and the turnpike.

The Beav would be great for Penn State but it’s just too big (and I have no doubt PSU charges more like Hershey).

Hersheypark stadium is an awful venue. Its like the BJC. Seats are too far back and sloped too flat. They should raze the old barn arena and stadium grandstands. Give arena land to expand the park and build new stadium stands for concerts.

It’s a $150 a year for a subscription, if you love wrestling this is cheap for what you get access to. Flo will have every round on ,whereas PCN only had the finals, glad they don’t have it anymore. Flo gives u access to so much wrestling content as well. I can find $150 for this and so can any wrestling fan if they truly care

I worked in Harrisburg for the last five years. That city is dead. There is hardly any restaurants or bars left. Strawberry square is literally a homeless shelter.
This is total BS! Lots of bars and restaurants all over the city and especially downtown.

Perhaps it's a value for some. I really don't have interest in watching much outside of what I already get. Plus I now get the ACC Network so I get more.

I'm sure you've read about the abundance of streaming issues they've had for every big event they have hosted. Plus how they tried to screw Willie. They seem like a bunch of whiny, petty assholes. They'll never see a dime from me.

Plus roughly 85 percent of schools are publicly funded. Events with those schools funds the PIAA. PCN is publicly funded as well. PCN should have the finals. Flo can stream the other rounds, and cut a deal for streaming the finals also if they can. Wrestling is the only sport the PIAA sold out to another media outlet.

Like what? Arooga's, Carley's, Sawyer's, Federal Tap House, the cork and fork, and burger yum? That's a hell of a lineup that would make me want to go down there and dodge the homeless and mentally ill. /sarcasm

Harrisburg is a dump and a joke of a city. The morons sold off all their parking garages so parking is around 20 bucks a day and killed any incentive for people to come in and park. They had to negotiate a deal with the SP parking because no one was paying 15 bucks to park for a sub par meal. just wait till this remote work continues and all that government office space doesn't get renewed for leases...it'll be even worse.

Apparently you don't realize that you can walk past the single block that all those you listed are on right? What a dope.

You're a clown. They aren't even good restaurants and there isn't anything else there worth going to. What, do you own a dying restaurant in downtown harrisburg? Hell, even jimmy john's closed.

Hershey has a better bar scene with many micro breweries, better restaurants and is much safer. It is also more for the 30 somethings and older. The young'uns like Harrisburg. I like the low key of a draft at Troegs

Hershey is nice and I'm there often. However, numbnuts above mentioned a few restaurants all on the same block and specifically pointed out Sawyers. He's got to be less than 27 to even mention that place and at 27 he's still reliving his HS heroics.

Both Harrisburg and Hershey have really nice restaurants and bars.

While Harrisburg isn’t the greatest city, it’s not like people are coming to spend the week for the football games and looking for beaches in December. Most are there and back same day of game. Some, depending on how far they are, might spend a night in the hotel.

If the game is at CV, no one is driving into Harrisburg to stay and eat. They’ll stay in the Mechanicsburg/ Carlisle region. There’s plenty of restaurants and hotels. As others have said, the Carlisle Corvette show brings in thousands more people than a PIAA game and the Mechanicsburg/ Carlisle area handles it just fine every year.

EDIT- For those that don’t know, the Carlisle car show brings in about 50,000- 60,000 people each summer.

Don't worry, you should reach puberty any day now. It's no wonder why after 5 years you haven't found places to go...no one likes you. If you weren't such a jerk I, or somebody here, would have given you lots of great recommendations. C'est la Vie.
