My granddaughter is going to be starting college in Pittsburg this fall (no- NOT Pitt).
She has promised to remain a PSU fan, and not to root for either the Steelers or the Pirates, and I've already explained to her that fries go with a sandwich, not in it.

What are some things that she should not miss while she is there? I really don't know a whole lot about the city.

Saturdays attending museums, concerts, plays, recitals, and poetry readings along with all of the other football fans in Pittsburgh.

As much as I despise their teams, Pittsburgh is a city with a lot to offer. I am sure the college will have some locals in her dorm who can show her around.

I have lived in the Pittsburgh area all my life, but I will not offer any information. I trust you are asking in good faith, but I fear this thread will get ugly. There are hundreds of articles available on line and I suggest you read some of those. I wish your daughter well.

I see your point, but it was an honest question.

For starters, the ‘h’ in Pittsburgh is something she shouldn’t miss.

PNC park is great, even if you don’t like baseball. Hofbräuhaus, Maggie’s farm, arsenal cider when she turns 21. Pamela’s for breakfast. Strip district on Saturday morning. Pitt games for naps and free beverages.

It’s hard to make suggestions for a kid really, but maybe you can buy her dinner at Monterey Bay on top of my Washington.

And I hope you get some honest answers. Pittsburgh is a great town, but like all cities, it has its share of problems. Still, the positives far outweigh the negatives and I expect she will have a terrific college experience. As I said earlier, I wish her well, and I pray you will have the wisdom to guide her on her journey from a distance (not an easy thing to do).

If she's never been?

- Warhol Museum
- Incline
- Mattress Factory Contemporary Art Museum
- Frick Museum
- Carnegie Museums
- Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
- Concerts at PPG Paints Arena & Stage AE
- Falling Water & Kentuck Knob
- Phipps Conservatory
- Pierogies at Cop Out

And there are tons of festivals and events in and around the city all year long. Not knowing what she likes but my guess is she'll have a great time. How/why some people won't comment on an innocuous thread like this for fear of 'politicization' is beyond me. Good luck to her!!

Good list, made infinitely better by the exclusion of Primantis.

What school is she attending ? Duquesne ? Carnegie Mellon ? Robert Morris ? Just asking so As to know where she’ll be located in the city and perhaps closer to certain attractions.

A good Gore-Tex jacket. Its always sunny in Philadelphia but Pittsburgh, the sun rarely comes out.

The sun comes out often enough. And unlike Philly, we don't have to worry about it helping us visualize as much random violence when it does.
Maybe the fact that Philly has 5 x the number of people contributes to this

If you’re gonna call out Pgh, then accept the fact that Philadelphia wishes it were New York City. If ever there was a little brother syndrome, that is it.

lol. Another little brother replies.

You should tell her to just follow the crowd and do what every other college student in Pittsburgh does on weekends...they drive 2.5 hours northeast to State College to have fun.

My daughter went to Duquesne. Here are some of the things she really liked about the city:

The South Side...or as locals pronounce it ... the Sowside. Many, many bars and restaurants there.

Kennywood Park and fright nights during Halloween.

Walking across the Clemente Bridge on Pirates game day to PNC Park. The Pirates suck but the Park is spectacular. The bridge shuts down to vehicular traffic during the game. Ot take a water taxi over from Dahntahn.

Attending Steelers games at Heinz Field. Not as nice as PNC but the atmosphere around the stadium is better than most NFL stadiums.

Parades. Pittsburghers love their parades. The St Patricks Day parade is a must while she's there.

Penguins games at PPG. For certain games they have dirt cheap student tickets. There is a cool roof top bar across the street. I think it's called The Blue Line.

If she likes Broadway, there is a theater district downtown that gets the touring shows.

She will enjoy Pittsburgh. It's a fun city.

There is also a 'Living Dead' weekend at The Monroeville Mall where 'Dawn of the Dead' was filmed. I think it's in June - if that's her thing...

If you're (obviously not you) are gonna call out Pgh for "little brother syndrome" at least make sense. No one in their right mind is jealous of Philadelphia's crime, or smell, or traffic, or relative lack of sports success. That's like being jealous of Pitt's poor attendance, or ignorant fan base, or complete lack of success in all collegiate sports, or their ugly campus.

Not sure why everyone gets worked up about Philly v. Pittsburgh.

Philly:

- Italian food, hoagies, pizza, cheesesteaks
- Solid sports teams and great fanbases
- Awesome historical significance
- Outstanding colleges and universities

Pittsburgh:

- Wings, pierogies, Pittsburgh/Primanti Sandwich; Western PA pizza
- Museums, theatre, culture
- Great sports teams and fanbases
- Solid colleges and universities

Philly is five times bigger than Pittsburgh. I love and enjoy both cities (noting Pittsburgh/Western PA is 'home') and though I live in Virginia will always be a proud Pennsylvanian.

I agree. I grew up in western PA and then went east, first to PSU then Harrisburg and have been in the Philly area for almost 30 years. I like both cities quite a lot. I suspect those that hate on either city have not spent much time there.

I even liked Harrisburg during the couple of years I lived there.

Additionally, *everyone* is playing second fiddle to NYC in America. It's a city unlike any other and will not be duplicated in this country.

No doubt. The big advantage Philly has over Pittsburgh is proximity to NYC (and DC). Just a short train ride to either city.

How long have you lived in Philly?? Or are you just repeating what others have said?

I've heard Pittsburgh called "Paris of Appalachia". Compliment or insult?? Probably a little of both.

but she's not a moron, so she won't likely be interested in doing that

It's a book, and a good one.

I've got to ask...have you ever lived in Philadelphia? If not, how close and how many have been in town for events? Have you ever been to Ben Franklin Parkway, which is literally lined with Museums, the showcase of course is the Philadelphia Art Museum but possibly outdone by the Barnes Foundation? Have you ever visited the Italian/Irish/Polish/German/etc sections of city and experienced their culture? Have you been to the Academy of Music, which is the oldest Opera House in the US and generally considered one of the most acoustically perfect buildings ever constructed?

I could go on and on...

I just wanted to capture this before the real moron of the family realizes he's on a Penn State board and attempts to delete this stupidity.
If you think that driving hours to go drinking in a college town isn't stupid, then your opinion is of no interest to me.

Same question to you but for Pittsburgh. My wife is from Philly and I’ve seen a lot - not everything, but a lot. It’s bigger than Pittsburgh, but IMO Pittsburgh has better museums and theatre. Philly has better food. They have Penn *and* Temple. I like the sports teams and venues in Pittsburgh better than Philly. Philly has better strip clubs.

Send me a list of places to visit in the various ethnic neighborhoods of Philly - happy to check them out.
