Did anyone see tOSU vs Wisconsin dual? At 141 Pletcher hammered Moran winning by MD. Luckily the video review didn;t change that outcome but talk about unintended consequences.

Score 0-0 and Pletcher gets awarded a TD (but he doesn;t have both legs so should not be a TD) but a few seconds later he definitely has the TD. Wisconsin challenges. Refs review and decide correctly (per the rules) that it was NOT a TD when they awarded it so TD is waved off and wrestlers return to neutral score still 0-0.

So Pletcher clearly had a TD but because the refs awarded it a few seconds before they should have and the video review rules have you go back to that point in time a legit TD is waived off. Ugh.

Saw it live, and felt the same. Didn't matter in this case, but in the right setting could be disastrous.

I actually appreciate the refs that hold back a little until positive of the takedown, and will never understand those fans that holler "twooo" once a wrestler only has control of his opponents shoelace.

Hopefully news/replay of this incident makes the rounds through the NCAA officiating ranks and has some influence for the remainder of the season. Agree that it was benign in this particular match but could be a big deal in certain situations. But we should remember it is a process, as the officials are building toward March. ;)

Oh, and it's f*n to yell "Twoooooooo!!!!". I like building it into my everyday life. That and "It's what we do" (which goes over especially well when only the singular is applicable).

The lack of continuation is awful in replay rules. I’m not sure exactly how to do it but there must be some way to allow for common sense.

It screwed Verk in the ASU dual, he got taken down and immediately escapes but they don’t call the takedown. So they review it and sure enough it’s a takedown but the escape goes away even though nothing about the missed call changed the action. Then Verk gets ridden out for the period and a bad call/review costs a point in an eventual 5-4 loss on riding time.

It was also mentioned in Bo’s Championship pin of Martin. There was some talk that Ryan should have challenged for two back points for Martin, which would have removed the reversal and pin if overturned. Again, in this case the call has no bearing on the action, but they would deny continuation. Could you imagine the mayhem that would have ensued if after all the celebration they review and all of a sudden it’s 4-0 Martin.

There are definitely cases where a missed call changes action going forward, but to make it so black and white just opens up this problem and shows that they don’t trust the refs to make a gray area decision.

The application of "no reaction time"
on TDs is a big part of the problem. I groaned when it came into play over the traditional "establish control"
application, and I still hate it. If you can't maintain a position of advantage over your opponent for greater than 0.1 sec, have you really attained a position of advantage?

To score a TD or reversal, I really wish holding position for a 1.5-2 second count were required.

Which raises one of the inconsistencies in today's application of the rules. If there is no reaction time allowed in TDs, why is there in falls? Touch-pins should be called if we're calling TDs that way.

- another issue with video reviews is also the 'timing' of the entire process (adding to possible confusion)

If that were the rule, then Tan Tom's tweeted pics would actually start having merit. Not how we would have handled it.

More seriously though: replay with no continuation has always been a minefield. The mines will go off -- just a matter of when and how much damage. So far the sport has been fortunate -- but things that can't last forever, won't.

In this case it was caused by a too-early takedown call by the referee. My observations over the past several years, this call is an outlier compared to almost all others.

Worth debating the rule, but this one has a root cause related to the referee too, which hasn't been mentioned.
