There is a really interesting interview with David Taylor on the TRow & Funky podcast that was posted this morning. He talks about the transition to freestyle after college, the struggles to adjust to his new weight class, his performance at Midlands last year, youth wrestling, Penn State wrestling, Iowa wrestling, and a bunch of other topics. Definitely worth a listen.

I listened to that as well. Just a fantastic podcast. I was surprised to hear Davids take on his Midlands performance last year. The whole interview was very candid, and interesting. DT is a great interview.

Anyone else think DT sounds just like Cael. Their voices are very similar, both often end a sentence with "right". They have very similar philosophies on many things in wrestling and life, how to promote the sport, how to keep kids involved and loving the sport. Very interesting.

they ripped "Iowa style" was pretty insightful stuff. you can clearly see Cael's philosophy pour out of DT

Here is my favorite part of what DT said (verbatim, some punctuation added, nothing deleted):

"It looks like they [Iowa] put a lot of emphasis on winning and losing, and ... just by their comments ... like by listening to Thomas Gilman and what he’s saying, and ... it’s just like they say ... it just sounds crazy to me. It’s like there’s so much emphasis on winning and losing ... and, like, "if I don’t win this match my parents should never talk to me ever again" ... like that may be ... uh ... maybe that’s like a joke, but I think when you say those things ultimately you believe them a little bit, and then you’re going to start tightening up a little bit each and every match, and if one guy is saying that, I imagine more guys are saying that, and that’s just ... uh ... that’s not conducive to success in my opinion, and that doesn’t sound very fun."

He actually does say during the interview that Iowa is one of the best jobs in the country and that'd be happy to coach there some day. The thought made me throw up in my mouth a little bit.

At first glance, I agree.

But thinking it through, Iowa hiring David Taylor would actually be Iowa Wrestling paying Cael a giant professional complement:

"If you can't beat 'em, then join 'em"
(Or hire 'em)

Digger - lots of Cael can only recruit stuff on HR today.

If Iowa hired David Taylor it would be earned by his own merit not those of Cael. Same can be said when Penn State hires Spencer Lee in 20 years :)

These are Cael's words big time....DT looks up to Cael more then anyone in the wrestling world....

Just finished the podcast.

Might be the best wrestling podcast / interview I've heard in a long time.

It's outstanding.

DT covers many topics - youth, HS, college, PSU v Iowa styles, international wrestling - and he is very honest & candid throughout.

A must listen.

Wrong. That will be Gavin Teasdale, after he wins Gold in the super heavyweight division at the olympics.

I've always thought, and Annieat285 have talked about it a lot, that DT's path might be Olympics, then on the staff at PSU (imagine him recruiting!) and, finally, Cael's successor. I would love to see him as Cael's replacement when Cael retires and have him continue the culture. A guy can dream, right?

yeah, maybe, and that would be great for PSU.

But Cael is only 37; hope he's around for a good time longer. DT is 26; I'm not sure the age difference works out to suggest DT as his successor. But there's plenty to enjoy in the meantime, with PSU on top and DT looking good for a shot at World/Olympic Gold.

Love the way you think! Only issue I see with it is: Cael is only 37 -- it might be 25 years until he retires (we could only be so lucky!), and DT might not want to wait that long.

As far as DT recruiting goes, we got a taste of it already: Bo Nickal got the Unicorn tour of campus a few years ago.
