I just read that the video boards will play other college football games for early arrivers in the stadium. Also first 40k get white Pom Poms, and discounts on stadium food. There will be a special pregame white out show, plus members of the 1986 championship team will be introduced at some point. Clearly they are encouraging fans to arrive early, be loud, and stay late. Sounds like a good idea to me. No worries with the security checks if you beat the crowd. I'll have my butt on the bench at 7:00.

Good idea

If you can't staff the gates .....enticing early entry is a positive move (BTW, a lot of this comes back to the equally idiotic move in 2001 (IIRC) - during the recent renovations renovation - when they went from 20 (IIRC) entry gates to 5 or 6 gates.......incredibly stupid move, and it was obvious at the time)

When we beat a Top 10 team at home we will be back as a national program. Win a divisional title and we will be in the F4 thanks to the toughest division in CFB. JF needs to keep bringing top end talent. Go State!

If they want to get fans in early, just start serving happy hour beer at the concession stands up until 45 minutes before kickoff. Cut the beer off for the game.

I believe that post 9/11 security requirements were a driving force behind reducing the number of entry gates. "The chain is only as strong as its weakest link" kind of thinking. I recall noticing that they had basically "barricaded" the stadium in 2001 with mounding around the perimeter, the facade around the superstructure and barriers at the entry gates to prevent a truck bomb type of event. But, alas, it is much easier to simply call everyone stupid.

Number of years tailgating at Penn State? 51 years

Tailgate Lot? Blue/Purple

I can’t forget to pack the…. tickets and parking. Tradition we would find at your tailgate?
Penn State fans enjoying the company of others and who are anxious to watch their football team.
Favorite menu item?
Have so many favorites that are so well prepared by those who tailgate with us. I just can't narrow 50+ years of tailgating down to one favorite.

Roughly how long would you say it takes to set up your tailgate each Saturday?

About 15 minutes..an additional 15 minutes to erect the tents when it is raining.

What makes a PSU game day so special? It's the whole package, the tailgating , the Blue Band including the Drum Major, the Lion, the student-section, the fans, the cheerleaders, the Lionettes, the music, the fireworks, the video board, the Beaver Stadium atmosphere and THE GAME!

Former and current Penn State Student-Athlete you enjoy watching? Where the former Penn State student-athlete is concerned, I have seen a plethora of outstanding players over the past 5 decades and the one I enjoyed watching was wearing blue. Concerning a current PSSA that I enjoy watching can be seen wearing white- Any student-athlete wearing blue and white!

How many family generations tailgate with you? Three generations and anticipating four.

Do you want your tailgate to be featured in NLC GameDay? Email us at nittanylionclub@athletics.psu.edu

The gates were consolidated in the stadium upgrade that opened for the Miami game in 2001, which was pre-9/11.

30 gates or whatever we had back in the day was ridiculous. In high school I was a ticket taker and our gate was a ticket or cash gate, and so many people knew it. A $40 handshake got you into the game for free. Even the gate manager didn't care. It was fantastic.

Good call, thanks. The terror threat was a concern prior to 9/11 and I believe that the mounding, barricades and faced each were to prevent someone from driving a truck filled with ammonium nitrate into a vulnerable area of the stadium. Obviously, post 9/11, even more security measure implemented; especially at the gates.

Correct, and this included not allowing re-entry to the stadium. Crazy to think that pre-9/11 you used to be able to leave the stadium before halftime, knock down a few beers and grab some food, and then pop back in for the second half.

Things like consolidation of gates as a security measure is a mixed bag. I get that it gives you added control over entry/exit from the stadium at a lower cost than having a large number of gates. But it also creates a mass of people at designated points around the stadium, thereby increasing the risk of some sort of incident at the security lines where everything is uncontrolled instead of inside the stadium where everyone has already passed through some sort of security checkpoint. IIRC, this is what happened in one of the Paris incidents, the entry line to an event was targeted.

These new security measures actually make security worse since it forces large amounts of people in one spot while they use their Toys R Us metal detector wands to not find anything.

Regarding the 1986 team (I was a junior that year)... but here's a little side story. Like most penn state's I had little love for Michael Irving. However in mid 90s I was living in Dallas and dating a girl who knew Irving a few other players on cowboys. Once at a restarant I got chance to sit and talk with Michael for at least 20-30 minutes. In person really a nice reasonable guy. When I got around to asking him about that game he smiled big smile, shook his head, and said verbatim, "to this day I don't understand how we lost that game".

IIRC, the defense was set up to smack the hell out of Miami's receivers whether they were on the receiving end of the pass or not. I believe its called a little gun shy. :)

Shane Conlan had a little something to do with that.
