Alright - the obligatory background. I generally eat like crap, but am blessed with a great metabolism. That said, I’m 50 and my typical breakfast of pop tarts and Milk - with a Diet Coke about an hour later isn’t going to cut it anymore.

Anyway, I’m finally turned over a new leaf, got a blender, and am making smoothies. That said, I really screwed up my choice of protein powder (thanks vegans - what do you know about taste) and got a mixed plant protein. Awful!!!! What out there is a versatile protein powder than can be mixed with a variety of stuff - fruit, healthy greens, etc and not turn everything into a foul tasting brew?

I like the Vega Line. Mix it with almond milk, cinnamon and ground flax seed Eat the fruit separate. I suggest you use the protein powder without fruit for a while, as the shake tends to loosen things about by itself.
Also like Orgain, which we buy at Costco in the big tub. The vanilla is very tasty.
When we want a shake with fruit, we use whey powder, yogurt and fruit, and put it thru the blender.

I like Isopure zerocarb. Lots of flavors.
But I am generally easy - gf hates it.

That’s one of the best proteins out there, but I don’t love the test.

Gold standards at GNC are fine. Not the best protein but taste ok.

Also type of protein will depend on what you’re trying to accomplish. Fast digestion whey isolate? Total meal replacement? Slow digestion casein?

This brand is really good....

Pretty much breakfast replacement. Can do it quick and doesn’t have me bonking at 11 like the normal crap I eat

Bluebonnet. Grass fed whey protein from New Zealand. Quality product and I like the taste better than any others I’ve tried.

Biotest metabolic drive is expensive but has great taste and is a thicker protein since it's a whey / casein blend. Excellent choice if you're using a blender anyway.

If you're doing a breakfast replacement, i'd do a casein protein or a whey/casein blend. Casein takes longer to digest so you feel full longer. At least it does for me. I take a whey isolate immediately after a workout because it digests VERY fast and gets protein to the burned out muscles darn near immediately. I do my casein at night, so my body can feed on it throughout the night.

That said, I swear by Dymatize. tastes amazing, and they have a ton of flavors. The wife takes syntha-6. She does banana or strawberry flavor with milk and a frozen berry blend, with some kale and chia seeds. tastes GREAT

Eat your curds and whey, or in this case just your whey. There is a product you can get off Amazon called TGS Whey Protein. It’s pure whey, unflavored and unsweetened. 25 grams of protein per serving. Made in USA. No ingredients from overseas - if that matters to you. I can mix it with a little chocolate milk or water and chocolate syrup and it tastes great. With water it tastes like a “skim” chocolate milk. It has a very subtle flavor, so you should be able to blend it with anything you want.

Muscle Milk taste very good imo. It’s high in fats however, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing depending upon what your doing.

But it tastes good and is slow digesting

Syntha6 has some of the absolute best tasting protein drinks anywhere!...absolutely love their products.

Smaller proportions and balanced with proteins carbs etc.

No. Not this at all. Eat a giant omelette — five eggs with tons of colorful veggies. Mix some heavy cream in with the eggs. If you like, top it with high quality cheese (grass fed preferred).

Stay away from any carbs you don’t get from plants or animals. Make sure you’re getting at minimum 50% of your calories from high quality fats.

Mix some collagen and coconut oil with your coffee (add heavy cream too if you like).

If you do want a protein shake, make sure it’s not loaded with carbs. Mix it with heavy cream, full fat Greek yogurt, collagen powder and some frozen berries (wild blueberries are my favorite).

Do this and you’ll be thanking me in 60 days.

If your current breakfast is poptarts, couldn't you just switch to oatmeal or a rasin bran? Maybe hard boil some eggs and eat with or without the yolk depending on how much fat you want?

If you could handle watching PSU football between 2001-2004 without throwing up I feel like you could suck down any protein powder on the market today.

Pure Protein chocolate is cheap and taste very good. Available at Walmart, Target, etc.

Muscle pharm combat cookies and cream. Costco has it on sale every so often for mid $20s. Highly recommend.

I second this. The best tasting protein powder I've ever had is Muscle Pharm, you cant really go wrong with any of the flavors.

Just saying...MusclePharm is garbage quality...You really need to look at the ingredients. Most of the cheap protiens are Nitrogen Spiked...meaning that if the label says 24g of Protein you are maybe getting 12 because they count worthless ingredients and count them as proteins. You really really need to look into brands that are NOT nitrogen spiked. Don't buy anything that has added ingredients into their mixes.

The best Protein you can get IMHO is the ProJym brand.

I eat cereals dry (hate soggy stuff), and have never liked oatmeal or rb. I like eggs but it’s a speed thing. I’m a single dad who has to get 2 hard to wrangle kids out the door and then I’m lucky to get to work by 9:15. I can make smoothies the night before and drink on way to work if I have to.

I (and my gf) meal prep 2-4 omelets at a time, and heat them up at work. She does 4 egg whites, I do 2 eggs plus 2 egg whites.
Not for everyone I know, but that is what we do.

Appreciate the input - got introduced to MP through the trainer at my gym who is a hyper marathoner / OCR / triathlete and never looked beyond that. What are worthless vs. worthwhile ingredients and are brands specifically labeled as not nitrogen spiked?

You can boil a weeks worth of eggs on sunday... Could also consider granola. I'm not trying to talk you out of pro shakes, but thought I'd mention alternatives as people do on the internet.

if there is added amino acids, creatine, or things of that nature there is a near 100% chance that the blend is spiked. The amino acids and creatine are counted in the Nitrogen count and that is how they get their protein count...you are likely getting 1/2 of the protein.

MusclePharm was actually involved in a class action lawsuit because of this....stay away from anything that lists Arginine, Glycine, Taurine, any other amino acids, and Creatine.

Stick with brands like ProJym, BPI, MTS, and Optimum Nutrition...there are some others but the ones that have just Whey, Casen, Egg, or whatever protein you prefer as the main ingredient

This is good stuff. I was just thinking about supplementing my diet with a protein shake once I can do squats and DL's again after I get my hip issues straightened out.

All of this is crap - spend a few minutes in the morning and make a healthy breakfast. Smaller proportions and balanced with proteins carbs etc. not pop tarts and soda.

Unless you plan on snorting it or freebasing it don't replace your real food with any kind of powder.
Agree. Maybe a fried egg, Canadian bacon, fruit, wheat toast and OJ.

Well, I work out at 5am, as I have to be on the road by 6:30. Working out in the late afternoon just isn't a viable option. I'm not going to try to lift on an empty stomach and I'm not going to have a big breakfast at 3:30 in the morning.

Yeah, but your situation is not the norm for most people. Most people have plenty of time to make a nutritious breakfast.
