PSU, $23m+ in playoff revenue so far

Starting next year, PSU will be able to plow football revenues into NIL. So maybe they can buy some more players and hold on to their up and coming talents.

Put every single dollar into NIL.

I really like Kraft.. think he is smart… knows the value of the Penn State brand…and yes.. big supporter of Franklin who is doing it right as frustrated as the board may be at times.. he send kids to the Pro’s.. recruits.. wins games.. fills the stadium.. and frankly with this new Stadium renovation along with our brand consistently making the playoffs now… money will keep rolling in.. and money right now is what it’s all about..

Pretty sure the money goes to the B1G and everyone gets a cut. I do think that we get to subtract expenses first tho.
Each conference is different. The BIG divides its cut equally among the schools and does not give more money to the CFP participants.

I assume the number you are quoting comes from this:

  • $4 million for each of the 12 teams that makes the College Football Playoff
  • $4 million for each of the 8 teams that makes the College Football Playoff Quarterfinals
  • $6 million for each of the 4 teams that makes the College Football Playoff Semifinals
  • $6 million for each of the 2 teams that makes the College Football Playoff National Championship Game
Additionally, each team who participates in the College Football Playoff receives $3 million to cover expenses for each round.

I would think the $14M PSU has earned for their participation and success goes to the Big Ten to be equally shared among teams. But the $9M for expenses likely is kept by PSU for their participation expenses.

As already mentioned, PSU did get parking and concession revenue from the home game (but not ticket revenue as that went to the CFP).

The story I read said the teams got $4m for each for first two rounds. $6m for last two rounds. $3m expenses per round.

I don't know their deal but if a school owns a billion dollar stadium I would think some of the ticket revenue has to go to the stadium. I think Temple pays a million a game to rent Lincoln financial.

For the home playoff games, the CFP set ticket prices and kept all revenue from ticket sales. Host teams retained parking and concession revenue.

Now I’m sure the CFP paid some rental fee to the schools to use their stadiums (allowing the schools money to actually provide game day functions) but teams didn’t getting any explicit cut of the ticket sales.

I am not sure what they get for the B10 championship game or hosting a playoff game. That revenue would be on top of the $23m.
I imagine that a lot of PSU merchandise is being sold right now too, which is additional revenue.

Again for the Franklin haters..if you are looking for a return on investment...it would be interesting to see where his overall salary compares to the amount of Bowl wins and other $$ directly contributed to the Teams success over the years he has been our Coach ? I bet its very good in his favor..which also drives me nuts why fans ie Buckeye Zealots would be calling for Day's Head...pure lunacy...

I don't think anyone complains about anything you are ranting about.

Most of us just want JF to learn that it's stupid to go for it on 4th and 2 from your own 30 when you are averaging 1 yd/carry in the game. We want him to learn when to go for 2 and when to kick the damn extra pt. We want the HC to be a plus-up on the talent level of the players.
Not sure how any of that is too much to ask.

All true, and yet Kirby Smart, the new Saban, bombed vs Notre Dame last week.

I read that each team gets $4m for making the playoffs and an additional $4 million for making it to the second and 3rd rounds. That's $12m + they also get $3m to cover expenses for each game so that would be $21m. Of course they have to pay expenses.

They get another $6 million if they make it to the finals.

The story I read says playoff mo ey goes up to $6 mil in round 3 which adds up to $23 mil.

One discrepancy is another story said the money goes to the b10 and is divided by all the schools.

Seems like a conflict of interest if the NCAA is keeping the revenue from ticket sales. It behoves them to award (rank) the home games to the teams with the largest stadiums.

It certainly works in our favor to get into the playoffs in future years! There may be extra pressure on the committee to rank us accordingly.

The teams have to get a piece of the ticket sales. Some teams done even own their own stadium. Some teams rent and common sense is the tiçkets sales should at least cover the cost of operating the stadium for a game.

Exactly - because Pitt rents their stadium they won't get playoff ticket revenue - oh wait never mind won't EVER be an issue for them.

ranting ; a long angry , and impassioned speech. Sorry...was not aware I was...ranting LOL...and I do agree with you..though wonder if some of these crazy calls on 3rd , 4th downs etc that we have seen this year..as nutty as it may seem..are just part of Andy's overall strategy to always keep the defense thinking...that we are unpredictable...and sans the Ohio State game this year...it seems to be working...one of the greatest calls I've ever seen ..and gutsy...and unpredictable was when Mark Dantonio in 2016 faked a chip shot FG that would have tied the game against Notre Dame in OT years ago..and the holder of the snap threw a TD instead to win the game for Sparty.. Dantonio had kept Kelly and the Irish off balance the entire game...

Just to be clear, I don't think the NCAA has anything to do with the CFP (other than allowing it to exist). This is not an NCAA run championship - which is why there still is no official "NCAA champion" in division 1-A football and it remains mythical - but is run by the CFP organization. It is the CFP that received the ticket revenue from the first round games.

That is horrible. I feel terrible for his family.
