PSU better than all of SEC

There was not a single team in the SEC better than PSU. If the measure is similar competition, we beat USC that beat two of the respected programs, we beat Illinois who beat a respected SEC team, and we did better in the regular season than Alabama or Ole Miss. Even our losses to common opponents were by less, closer match with ND than UGA and closer with OSU than Texas (although the score doesn’t quite indicate how close it was).

So if it’s any consolation, we would have been #1 in the SEC this year.

Texas was solid this year in the SEC. Many times it's tough to evaluate teams because some teams - because of strengths and weakness - just matchup better than others would against a team

I would say the only SEC team better than PSU this year would be Texas. Texas is very good this year and gave OSU all they could handle. OSU's final TD was a quirk and not really indicative of who was better.

Ehh--probably but reality is we finished tied for 3rd
We're even with Texas

Reality is whatever the pundits want to make it. We won two playoff games and perception of the program has not changed one iota. We’ll be behind Oregon as well.

The voting doesn't matter when there's a playoff

Doesn’t matter for numbers 1/2. Matters elsewhere because the brackets aren’t even. Didn’t you hear we had a cakewalk and SMU/Boise are trash? Still no big wins and we are trash too.

Our playoff run has an asterisk according to everyone else.

Or worse than most of the MAC using similar logic?

I don't disagree with that but the rankings don't matter--just like they don't in any other college sport. The playoff results are all that matter--who cares is someone thinks we're 3 or 8. It's an opinion

They don’t matter. But they do.

No sport is more perception dependent, even with the 12 team playoff.

Is it better or worse for us if ESPN constantly talks about how easy our path was and we lost to the first real team we beat? What they say doesn’t matter but there’s still an obvious answer to that question. Same w the rankings.

But wasn't our path easy? I mean, it's okay to acknowledge that we got a great draw. That reality is way more damning that if we're 3 or 6. No recruit cares if we're 3 or 6 after we played in the semis.

Yeah, the transitive property stuff doesn't work.

All things being equal, I'd take Texas over Penn State on a neutral field. That's probably it......although UGA before Beck's injury would also get the nod over Penn State.

No. We will be top 5 and ahead of Georgia. A team that won 0 playoff games should not be top 5.

And Texas was a targeting call away from losing to ASU. Winning is sometimes razor thin.

Agreed on the Georgia part. However, Oregon didn't win a playoff game either, but since they beat Penn State head-to-head (and had the misfortune of drawing OSU in the quarterfinals while we got to play a Boise team that Oregon already beat), they get the nod.

1. OSU-ND winner
2. OSU-ND loser
3. Oregon
4. Texas
5. Penn State
6. Georgia

3-5 are up for debate, but Texas went into the playoff ahead of Penn State and didn't really do anything to warrant getting jumped. Oregon's 13-1 record and Big Ten title earns them the top spot outside the top-2.

Then the playoff is trash. Back to the drawing board. Some people are never satisfied.
