I must admit, CJF is having some trouble overcoming the "salesman" moniker, at least in my eyes. We know what he does well, and what has yet to be accomplished. BUT, to be fair, I am also very impressed by several other more subtle, off-the-field qualities Coach has displayed to date:
1. His team's high GPA.
2. the absence of academic issues by this team.
3. the absence of off the field issues by this team.
4. their participation in numerous charities.
5. the increasing number of players and coaches who "meet the press" and handle themselves well.
6. the teams overall unity and positive attitude, despite dealing with yet another coaching staff and coaching philosophy.
7. the apparent selectivity with which CJF chooses those to whom he offers football scholarships, with an apparent eye on their ability to fit in, grow, and eventually thrive as part of the PSU football team and student body.
8. His promotion of and ability to bring about unity.
8. To sum it up in one word, CHARACTER.
I like the character of the teams he has put together. And that's a helluva good start. IMO, CJF is deserving of some time to shape the product on the field to match the character of his athletes. There certainly are some serious challenges remaining, but on balance I'm more comfortable with him at the helm than nearly all other BT football coaches. Perfection is their goal, and it's fun to watch when it happens. But too often good coaches are replaced when universities bow to pressure to "get there fast." Joe had time, and learned how to be great.
So all I can say is "Best of luck" to a genuinely good person and a fine coach.
