Just saw this statistic in a Philadelphia Inquirer article mentioning the addition of 4 new female BOT members, and that Frazier and Taliaferro would be leaving the Board in July, leaving only one black member remaining. It's hard to imagine so few black students at a major state university. Anyone know how this compares with other Big 10 schools?

What do you think it should be given that America is 13.2% African American?

I haven't seen the Inquirer article. However, I believe the 6.0% figure is for University wide (i.e., branch campuses included).

By comparison, here are the figures for some B1G schools. I'll try to add to it tomorrow (falling asleep while looking up the data):

Ohio State:
Columbus - 5.33%
Total University - 5.60%

Michigan:
4.65%

Michigan State:
7% (data appears to be for combo of undergrad and grad)

Purdue:
3.9%

I'm African American and when I was on campus ten years ago I was told it was 4%. The university aggressively recruits African Americans but the enrollment number remain low. I would be surprised if they are any better at other B1G schools.

Pitt, an urban school, is 5.7% Black. (2014 article)

It's mostly a function of geography. A rural (at least in perception) university rarely attracts large minority students. Clemson University is 6% while USC is 17.5%. I'd say PSU is doing pretty well.

And its no coincidence that both of those schools are located in areas with a higher % of African Americans.
So it pretty much makes sense. There is nothing nefarious about it.
Nobody claimed there was anything nefarious but the percentages are what they are. A number of other Big Ten schools are located in or near areas with a larger percentage of black population. Columbus has 28% black residency. Minneapolis/St. Paul is 15%+. Ann Arbor is only 45 miles from Detroit which is 82%. That's not to imply any of those schools are intentionally denying admittance to black people. I'm sure there are a raft of factors involved.

Wasn't necessarily implying that your post was nefarious, just the ones that I'm sure will follow, will try to imply something.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jimmie-lee-solomon/african-american-baseball-players_b_4923689.htmlSo is MLB according to an article I read last year. I didn't believe it because it doesn't seem like too many white men on MLB rosters. It turns out that most are Hispanic.

Even more important is that a small percentage of blacks can qualify due to the poor education in the inner cities where they live. Also, rural America is hard for many kids of any race to select for their education

Just out of curiosity, where did you grow up and go to high school, and how/why did you end up at PSU?

I was born and raised in Warren, PA by my mother and was dirt poor for a lot of years. I had very good grades and testing but no scholarship offers. She pushed me to Penn State. She married my dad after I graduated HS. He was an amazing man. They paid my tuition and board, I worked at a sandwich route and borrowed about $3,000. I was a terrible student but lucked out and went to work for General Electric.

Born and raise in Philly. Started watching the Penn State Football story around eight years old was a nit ever since.

NitSec, I wonder how many of us had the same experience of being attracted to PSU by more than just a superficial view of the football team? I had an experience similar to yours, albeit from northwestern PA, in that the story behind the story is what has held me as a Penn Stater for more than five decades.

Mary, I was actually asking Nittany Security because of the African American theme of this thread, but I'm glad you responded. I also grew up in Warren from age five through 18, when I enlisted in the Marine Corps. My time at PSU was during a break in service when I was 25 (in 1982.....I like to think I had something to do - from the stands, of course - with that first National Championship!). It's been a long strange trip, with many strange people met along the way!
